Pokémon Winds & Waves: 10 Pokémon That Absolutely Need To Return

After the February trailer for Pokémon Winds and Waves, fans are starting to guess which Pokémon will appear in the new games, expected in 2027. Given the tropical, island-based setting and the game titles, many believe we’ll see a lot of Flying and Water-type Pokémon.

Some Pokémon, like Pikachu, Gyarados, and Eevee, seem to appear in almost every new game. But instead of focusing on those familiar faces, we’re looking at Pokémon that would be a good match for the upcoming region and fit the game’s theme of ‘winds’ and ‘waves’.

10. Squawkabilly From Gen 9

Just Begging For New Variants In Gen 10

Squawkabilly, a Pokémon introduced in Scarlet and Violet, isn’t especially remarkable except for its different forms. The upcoming Winds and Waves games have the potential to make Squawkabilly more interesting by adding even more variations, giving players a better reason to use it. Given the theme of Winds and Waves, we can anticipate many Flying- and Water-type Pokémon appearing, and a tropical bird like Squawkabilly would fit perfectly in the new region’s island setting.

9. Oranguru From Gen 7

Alongside A New Evolution Or Variant

Ever since rumors started about the new Generation 10 games taking place in an Asia-inspired island region, many fans have hoped to see Oranguru return – and maybe even get a new evolution or regional form. It would be a natural fit for Oranguru, and its related Pokémon Passimian, to receive updates in the upcoming Winds and Waves games. Given the similarities between the Alola region and the new Gen 10 region, it would be great to see these popular Pokémon from Generation 7 make a comeback.

8. Wingull (& Pelipper) From Gen 3

Along With Regional Variants

Wingull and Pelipper perfectly represent the themes of wind and water, making them strong candidates for inclusion in the new games – and we’ve already seen Wingull in the trailer! While these Pokémon debuted in Generation 3, it would be exciting to see them get new regional forms in Generation 10. This could both refresh these familiar faces and appeal to fans who fondly remember playing Ruby and Sapphire.

7. Vileplume From Gen 1

Time For A Regional Variant

Since Oddish and Gloom were featured in the Winds and Waves trailer, it’s highly likely Vileplume will also appear, especially if Leaf Stones are available in the new games – which seems probable. Like Wingull and Pelipper, it would be great if Vileplume received a new regional form or some kind of update. A different type combination for this Pokémon could also be beneficial, given how many Grass- and Poison-type Pokémon already exist.

6. Milotic From Gen 3

This Water Pokémon Deserves More Love

Feebus isn’t very strong – it’s often compared to the weak Pokémon Magikarp. However, its evolved form, Milotic, is stunning and considered one of the most beautiful Water-type Pokémon. While Milotic first appeared in Generation 3, it hasn’t been prominently featured in recent games, and hasn’t given players much incentive to use it in battle. A return in Winds and Waves would be a great opportunity to highlight Milotic and give this Pokémon the attention it deserves.

5. Corviknight From Gen 8

The Coolest Bird Pokémon Should Return

Since the next generation of Pokémon (Gen 10) is themed around winds and waves, we can anticipate seeing many Flying and Water-type Pokémon. While Corviknight is strongly connected to the Galar region from Sword and Shield, it and its evolutionary line could still appear in the new games. Corviknight has a fantastic design, and it would be great to see it included in Gen 10, even if it doesn’t get a new regional form. Just having it return would be exciting!

4. Melmetal From Gen 7

Finally, Some Answers Regarding Its Home

Melmetal technically debuted in the seventh generation of Pokémon, but it’s become most associated with the mobile game, Pokémon GO. Its backstory still says it comes from a mysterious, unknown place. With the release of a new region in the tenth generation of games, we might finally learn where it originated. It’s been almost ten years since Melmetal (and Meltan) were first introduced, so fans are hoping for some answers soon.

3. Kyogre From Gen 3

This Legendary Pokémon Should Return

Kyogre is a really popular Legendary Pokémon, and it could be a significant addition to the potential Winds and Waves expansion. It would be great to see this Pokémon from Generation 3 return in a main series game, especially if it’s available after completing the main story – like most Legendaries. Even better would be if Kyogre played a key role in the story of the next generation of Pokémon games.

2. Keldeo From Gen 5

Another Water Legendary To Catch

Okay, so Keldeo is one of those Pokémon that feels a bit forgotten, even though it’s a Legendary from Gen 5. I mean, yeah, I could catch it in the Crown Tundra DLC for Sword and Shield, but it just feels like it doesn’t get the spotlight it deserves. Honestly, I’d love to see Keldeo play a big role in a main-series Pokémon game’s story – it has a really awesome design, but it hasn’t been used much so far. With the new Winds and Waves game being water-focused, it feels like the perfect opportunity to finally give Keldeo the attention it deserves!

1. Vaporeon From Gen 1

A Regional Variant To Boost Eeveelution Hype

Fans are buzzing about the possibility of a new Eeveelution appearing in the upcoming Winds and Waves game. One idea is to introduce a regional form of Vaporeon, which would fit the game’s setting and be the first time an Eevee evolution has gotten a regional variant. This could generate a lot of excitement and breathe new life into the Eevee family in Pokémon.

With the release of Pokémon Winds and Waves planned for 2027, we’re anticipating more details about returning Pokémon, regional forms, and other features. Since the game is still over a year away, we expect to learn more about the new Pokémon for Generation 10 throughout 2026. It looks like it will be a great year for Pokémon fans!
