Xbox has been giving us glimpses of its next-generation Project Helix, but Sony hasn’t said much about the PlayStation 6. Now, Sony has finally shared an update on its next console, and it may not be the news fans were hoping for.
Sony recently shared some information about the PlayStation 6 in its financial report released on Friday, May 8th. The report, which covered the 2025 fiscal year and included PlayStation 5 sales figures, also discussed how rising component costs might impact the development of the PS6.
During a recent financial call, Sony’s president and CEO, Hiroki Totoki, stated that the company hasn’t determined when or how much its next console will cost, according to a report by VGC. Totoki explained that because the cost of parts is expected to stay high through 2026, Sony needs to carefully monitor the situation before making any decisions.
Sony isn’t just planning to wait for market conditions to improve or sell its consoles at a higher price. According to Hiroki Totoki, the company is exploring different options, including new business strategies, to find the best path forward. While it’s unclear exactly what changes Sony might make, the gaming landscape is evolving. With Microsoft allowing Xbox games on PCs and Valve’s Steam Machine bringing PC gaming to the living room, the future of consoles could look quite different from what we’re used to.
The PlayStation 5 will continue to be PlayStation’s main source of hardware revenue, despite recent price hikes. The digital version now costs $599.99, the standard version with a disc drive is $649.99, and the new PS5 Pro model will be priced at $899.99. Nintendo is also raising prices; the Switch 2 will increase from $449.99 to $499.99 starting September 1, 2026.
Xbox has shared some initial details about Project Helix, but the cost of their next gaming system is still unknown. Even the Steam Machine, expected to release this year, hasn’t announced a price yet. It seems likely that gaming will continue to become more expensive, but we don’t know how much the PlayStation 6 and other competing consoles will ultimately cost.
