The popular pirate adventure series currently has five films, and a sixth has been hinted at for some time. Before the new film is released, the original director, Gore Verbinski, discussed whether he might return to direct.
Gore Verbinski launched the popular film series in 2003 and went on to direct the next two installments, Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and At World’s End (2007). While promoting his new movie, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, he recently discussed the possibility of revisiting the franchise.
Verbisnki said he’s poured everything he had into the first three films and really enjoyed directing them, but he doesn’t plan to return for any future installments. He expressed his good wishes for the franchise’s continued success.
He said he felt completely depleted. He’d already given it his all, and the experience was a valuable learning opportunity. He believes they were pushing things to the limit, and once something becomes too familiar, it loses its excitement and risk. He also feels there’s never enough time to share all the stories he has.
Rob Marshall directed the fourth film, On Stranger Tides, and Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning co-directed Dead Men Tell No Tales.
What’s Next for Pirates of the Caribbean?
Based on a popular Disney theme park ride, the movie series proved to be a big financial success. While reviews weren’t always great, the films consistently drew large audiences, earning a total of $4.52 billion worldwide on a production budget of roughly $1.27 to $1.3 billion.
Two of the Pirates of the Caribbean films earned over $1 billion globally. Dead Man’s Chest, directed by Gore Verbinski, made $1.06 billion with a $225 million production cost, while On Stranger Tides (released in 2011) grossed $1.04 billion from a $378.5 million budget.
Given the franchise’s success, Disney was eager to make more films. However, several problems arose. Plans for a sequel existed even before On Stranger Tides was released, with Disney hoping to film the fifth and sixth movies consecutively. Ultimately, the sequel didn’t materialize, and Disney ended its working relationship with Johnny Depp following the allegations of domestic abuse and the defamation lawsuit involving his ex-wife, Amber Heard.
Disney still wants to make more Pirates of the Caribbean movies and has even expressed interest in Johnny Depp returning. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is planned for 2025, hinting at exciting developments.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said Johnny Depp would likely return for another film if he enjoys the script. He explained that the quality of the writing is the most important factor for Depp, as it is for most actors.
A film focusing on younger characters and starring Margot Robbie is also in development. It was first announced in 2020 and is still upcoming.
