Imagine you’re a big Pink Floyd enthusiast. You probably know most, if not all, of their songs, particularly those released on their albums. Now, let’s assume you use several different music streaming services.
If you already own the band’s essential songs, you probably don’t need another greatest hits album. However, fans will be getting one anyway on July 5th with the release of 8-Tracks, which features eight songs. There’s a possible reason to pick up the vinyl or CD version, though.
This collection will feature a longer version of “Pigs on the Wing” from the album Animals. While this track has been released before, it was only available on the 8-track version of the original album. If you’re a big fan of the song, this compilation is worth checking out.
Pink Floyd is dropping new compilation in July (but does it matter?)
A challenge facing music compilations today is that streaming services allow people to easily create their own personalized playlists daily. While it’s great that the new Pink Floyd compilation was carefully edited for seamless transitions by Steven Wilson, it’s questionable whether that alone will drive sales of physical copies or merchandise. It might not be enough to convince people to buy something they can already experience through streaming.
Vinyl records generally offer a warmer sound than digital streaming, but the difference between a vinyl record and a CD isn’t significant. 8-track tapes, however, at least have a small redeeming quality that prevents them from being a complete waste of money.
Pink Floyd has released many compilation albums over the years. However, with today’s streaming services, these albums don’t feel as necessary. Why purchase a pre-made compilation when you can easily create your own playlist on platforms like Amazon Music or Spotify, selecting exactly the songs you want? (The tracklist is provided below.)
This isn’t meant to criticize Pink Floyd at all, but the way people listen to music is different now than it was in 1981 when they released A Collection of Great Dance Songs. While fans may enjoy most songs on a greatest hits album, they often prefer to build their own custom playlists. That’s just how music consumption works today.
Side one of 8-Tracks:
Here are four popular Pink Floyd songs: “One Of These Days” (from the album Meddle), “Wot’s… Uh The Deal” (from Obscured By Clouds), “Money” (from The Dark Side Of The Moon), and “Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2” (from The Wall).
Side two
Here are four popular songs by Pink Floyd: “Wish You Were Here” (from the album Wish You Were Here), “Time” (from The Dark Side Of The Moon), “Comfortably Numb” (from The Wall), and “Pigs On The Wing” (originally released on the Animals 8-track cartridge).
