HBO has dropped the first trailer for Rooster, a new comedy series starring Steve Carell and Phil Dunster. The show comes from Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, the creative team behind Ted Lasso. Carell plays a successful author who must deal with a strained relationship with his daughter, Katie.
The trailer for the movie Rooster is now available, and it shows Steve Carell playing Greg, a father who visits his daughter’s college campus to see how she’s doing. She tells him, “I don’t need you to check on me,” but he’s simply trying to support her as she deals with a tough time following her husband’s decision to leave her for another student.
Greg met with the college president, Walter Mann, hoping to protect Katie’s job, but was shocked to learn she was accused of arson and assaulting a professor. Mann then suggested the university could benefit from Greg’s assistance, and Greg ended up observing a class discussion about one of his books.
During the divorce proceedings, Katie’s soon-to-be ex-husband stated, “We all made mistakes, but deep down, we’re all good people.” This comment prompted Greg to express his dislike for his future son-in-law.
About halfway through the trailer, viewers learn the origin of the series’ title, Rooster. The students have nicknamed Greg this because he resembles a character from one of his books. Greg comes to terms with the fact that he can’t solve his daughter’s issues and acknowledges he isn’t the confident figure he portrays in his writing. However, students around campus reassure him and inspire him to embrace life and enjoy it to the fullest.
