The Who never really disappeared. Although the band initially broke up, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey consistently reunited. Since then, they’ve continued to tour, record albums, and even performed at the Super Bowl halftime show.
The Who’s latest album didn’t get as much attention as you might expect from such a famous band. Released in 2019, it was their first album in thirteen years and proved to be surprisingly strong. While it didn’t produce any immediately classic songs, that might be an unfair expectation given the band’s incredible history and the lasting impact of their earlier work.
As a huge fan, it was amazing to hear that Roger Daltrey’s voice still sounds incredible, and Pete Townshend is still a phenomenal guitarist and songwriter! What really got me excited, though, was seeing Pete hint on Instagram that Roger wants to make another album – fingers crossed this isn’t the last we hear from The Who!
Pete Townshend implies the Who could make another album
Pete Townshend of The Who shared on Instagram that he was purchasing a writing studio from Rick Astley. A fan then unexpectedly commented, questioning whether The Who would ever release another album.
The guitarist answered, surprisingly, “You might be wrong. Roger (Daltrey) wants to give it a try.”
Just because Pete Townshend has been writing doesn’t guarantee a new Who album is coming. He’s always pursued various musical projects outside of the band – from Broadway shows to numerous well-received solo albums. He consistently delivers excellent work, whatever the project.
Buying a writing studio could mean many things, so it was silly and misinformed for the fan to assume The Who wouldn’t release a new album. Unless, of course, the ‘fan’ was actually Roger Daltrey – which isn’t happening.
2026 looks like a great time for The Who to consider making a new album. They’ve been actively touring, meaning they’re already well-rehearsed and comfortable playing together. Plus, Pete Townshend has a new writing studio, and there’s a fun possibility that Rick Astley could contribute to the songwriting process.
