Kris Marshall, star of Beyond Paradise, has revealed that the storyline about Martha and Humphrey becoming foster parents will be put on hold for the show’s fourth season, which premieres this Friday.
Actor Detective Goodman told Digital Spy that after Rosie’s departure, the show’s creators decided to pause that storyline in season three, and it wasn’t explored further in season four.
Ever since the show Beyond Paradise began, Martha and Humphrey have been trying to start a family. They first attempted to have a child through IVF after experiencing a heartbreaking miscarriage in the first episode, and later decided to explore fostering.
They welcomed nine-year-old Rosie into their home as a long-term foster child during the third season, but were surprised by how upset they felt when she eventually left.
Marshall explained that fostering Rosie was harder on them than they expected. He wasn’t sure if ‘hurt’ fully captured their feelings, but they’d wanted to help and didn’t anticipate how deeply it would impact them.

The family grew very close to her – she stayed with them longer than any of their other foster children. It was hard to see her return to her birth mother, because they’d begun to picture her as a permanent part of their family.
He continued by explaining that facing reality can be difficult, and he believes this was a major reason Martha and Humphrey finally decided to get married in the Christmas episode.
No matter what changes happen in their family life, they agreed that their bond with each other would always be the most important thing. They are each other’s foundation and that’s what truly matters.
This season, Martha and Humphrey will face new obstacles as they transition from living on a boat to a traditional house.
Marshall said Humphrey really loves his boat. He appreciates the idea of living on a boat, but the actual experience hasn’t lived up to his expectations, and he’s become disappointed as a result.
Humphrey tends to be a dreamer, not very practical, so Martha usually takes care of things and solves problems.
Marshall isn’t sure if the show will explore fostering again. He said it’s possible, but also possible they’ll choose a different storyline – ultimately, it’s up to the writers.
