Perfect Irish comedy-thriller with a “great twisting storyline” branded a “gem” lands new UK home

The comedy-thriller Obituary, created by Ray Lawlor for RTÉ and originally shown in 2023, is coming to ITVX soon. If you enjoy shows like Dexter and Sweetpea, this is one to watch! It’s set in a small Irish town and stars Siobhán Cullen (The Dry, Bodkin) as Elvira Clancy, a writer of obituaries for the local paper.

The series follows Elvira, who unexpectedly finds she’s good at killing people after being transferred to a system where deaths are compensated with payment.

She gets rid of the people everyone in town dislikes, which keeps her job safe and gives her plenty of ideas for her writing. All this happens while she tries to avoid raising the suspicions of the new, attractive crime reporter.

I’m so excited to hear that the first season of Obituary is coming to ITVX as a complete box set on May 24th! ITV is really focusing on shows that are both gripping and clever – they’re calling them ‘word-of-mouth hits’ which basically means shows everyone will be talking about. It’s great to see them supporting crime dramas with a really sharp, witty edge.

This highly praised thriller has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and many viewers are comparing it to the show Dexter. Empire magazine described it as a mix of Dexter and Bad Sisters, praising the lead actor Cullen as both chilling and surprisingly sympathetic.
