You can now watch Joe Cole’s film, A Prayer Before Dawn, for free on Plex, a streaming service with ads. The movie, which came out in 2018, is based on Billy Moore’s true story and memoir about his time in Thai prisons.
Okay, so I just started watching this movie, and it’s intense. The main character, Billy, is played by this actor from Peaky Blinders, and he’s a British boxer who gets into some serious trouble. He’s also battling addiction, and it lands him in a really brutal Thai prison. Honestly, the stuff he goes through inside is pretty shocking – we’re talking extreme violence, and some really awful stuff like rape and just how corrupt the whole system is. It’s a tough watch, but super gripping.
As Billy’s mental health worsened, he threw himself into boxing and Muay Thai, eventually competing for the prison in a national tournament. But can he overcome his personal struggles?

Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire directed the film, and Jonathan Hirschbein and Nick Saltrese wrote the script. The movie features many actors from the local community, and includes a brief appearance by the actual Moore.
I’ve been hearing a lot about A Prayer Before Dawn, and it sounds amazing! Everyone’s been raving about it, and it’s got a seriously high score on Rotten Tomatoes – 92% from 64 reviews, which is pretty incredible. What really caught my attention is how the lead actor, Cole, totally immersed himself in the role. Critics are saying his performance felt really authentic and gritty, which makes the story even more powerful.
