Charlie Quirke, son of Pauline Quirke, has spoken about a moving and wonderful day running the London Marathon. He was raising money for dementia charities after his mother received a diagnosis.
Charlie, along with his team – including his fiancée Chloe Thornton and friend Jack O’Connell – completed the marathon to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Actress Pauline, 66, stepped away from the spotlight after being diagnosed with dementia in 2021.
Approximately one million people in the UK live with this condition, and her 31-year-old son, Charlie, is dedicated to raising awareness and finding a cure.
Charlie ran the 26.2-mile race through London on Sunday to raise money and awareness, and has already collected over £11,000 in donations.
Oh my gosh, Charlie just posted! A whole series of pictures, and they were everything! There was this amazing photo of him and Chloe kissing – seriously, my heart melted! – and another one with the whole Team Quirke crew. I screenshotted them all, obviously. I can’t stop looking! It was the perfect post, honestly. I’m living for this moment!
He shared a post saying the London Marathon was incredibly challenging, but he was proud of everyone’s accomplishments and enjoyed the day with his family and friends, all while raising money for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Charlie and his dad, Steve Sheen, shared the news of Pauline’s diagnosis last year, but she had actually been living with it for four years prior to that.
Charlie’s friend, actor Jack O’Connell—who also participated in the marathon—first met Pauline while she was playing DS Blunt on the E4 show Skins. Since then, he’s become a successful actor in Hollywood.
Before the race, Charlie explained to the Mirror that he only wanted to participate if his closest friends, Chloe and James, could run with him for support.
When they actually said YES to my idea, I was over the moon! I immediately started putting together Team Quirke, reaching out to my closest friends – the people I knew I could count on. And honestly, as soon as I explained why we had to do this, they were totally on board. It was amazing – everyone just understood!
He added: ‘I just want to make my mum proud.’
Charlie exceeded their fundraising goal of 10,000 so quickly that they’ve increased it to 15,000, hoping to collect even more money for the charity.
James Corden and Dominic Cooper have generously contributed to the cause, with Corden donating £2,000 and Cooper giving £500.
The team also featured Luke Roskell, a former colleague of Pauline’s from her early days on Emmerdale, along with Adam Long from Waterloo Road, Andrew Knott of Gavin & Stacey, and sports presenter James Sharman.
To support Alzheimer Research UK, Charlie recently completed a 140-kilometer walk over five days, raising both money and awareness for the charity’s important work.
He not only achieved his goal, but also raised approximately £175,000 for dementia research.
Pauline’s ex-castmate surprised her son Charlie during day two of the ‘Trek For A Cure’ challenge.
Mathew Baynton, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Perry Benson helped Charlie kick off the second day of his challenge, despite the wet weather.
Charlie walked through places that were important to the Birds of a Feather actress as part of his charity walk, following in her footsteps and remembering her life.
