Sean Penn won the Supporting Actor award at this year’s BAFTAs, held in London on Sunday night. Paul Mescal and Jacob Elordi were both nominated but didn’t win, with Penn taking home the prize for his performance in One Battle After Another.
The actor from ‘The Milk’ couldn’t be there to receive the award, so the presenter, Gillian Anderson, playfully said she would take it instead.
Despite receiving high praise for his role in Hamnet, the Irish actor missed out on the honour.
I was so thrilled to see Jacob nominated for his incredible performance as the Monster in Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein! It was a truly captivating role, but sadly, he couldn’t make it to the awards ceremony. We all missed him, but were still cheering him on from afar.
Benicio Del Toro (One Battle After Another), Petter Mullan (I Swear), and Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value) were also nominated in this category.
Paul didn’t receive an Oscar nomination, but his “Hamnet” co-star, Jessie Buckley, is nominated for Best Actress at both the Oscars and the BAFTAs.
Wunmi Mosaku, known for her role in ‘Sinners,’ was one of the first to win an award at the ceremony, taking home the prize for Best Supporting Actress.

She explained that playing the character of Annie in ‘Sinners’ allowed her to reconnect with a side of herself she’d previously suppressed while adjusting to a new life as an immigrant.
Ryan Coogler created the character of Annie, a Hoodoo priestess in ‘Sinners,’ with Mosaku in mind. Mosaku, who grew up in Manchester, also spent eleven years singing with the Manchester Girls’ Choir.
After graduating from Rada, she quickly gained recognition for her role in the 2010 film I Am Slave, where she portrayed a Sudanese girl forced into slavery.
She received a BAFTA award for her supporting role as Gloria, Damilola Taylor’s mother, in the TV drama Damilola, Our Loved Boy. She’s also been in major films like Deadpool & Wolverine and Batman vs Superman.
Born in Zaria, Nigeria, to two university professors, she currently resides in Los Angeles and is expecting her second child.
Mosaku said it felt amazing to work on the film, as she’s a big fan. She previously received a Bafta TV Award for her performance as Gloria Taylor in ‘Damilola, Our Loved Boy’.
She described the positive reception to their film, ‘Sinners,’ as incredibly rewarding. ‘We put our hearts and souls into this project,’ she said, ‘so seeing audiences connect with it last year was amazing. These nominations are just the perfect finishing touch.’
