When the HBO show Euphoria first aired in the summer of 2019, it quickly became popular and helped launch the careers of many now-famous actors.
Zendaya, known for her powerful portrayal of Rue, a character battling drug addiction, has received an Emmy Award and continues to achieve massive success in movies like Spider-Man and the Dune films.
Jacob Elordi, known for his role as Nate Jacobs, earned his first Oscar nomination recently. Meanwhile, Sydney Sweeney, who plays Cassie Howard, is still grabbing attention for both her personal life and a widely discussed political issue.
Many viewers considered Alexa Demie, a 35-year-old actress and singer from Los Angeles who wasn’t widely known at the time, to be the biggest star to emerge from Euphoria. Her portrayal of the bold and devoted Maddy Perez quickly won over fans, and her character’s fashion choices made Demie a style icon.
Recently, Demie’s career hasn’t progressed as quickly as those of her fellow actors from Euphoria. The upcoming third season of Euphoria, premiering this Sunday on HBO, will be her first acting role in almost two years.
A source at the Daily Mail has revealed the reasons behind Alexa Demie’s recent success and struggles, and why she believes returning to the show Euphoria will lead to more acting roles in Hollywood.
According to a source who spoke with the Daily Mail, Alexa is optimistic that this season will lead to more job offers in Hollywood, as she believes she deserves the same level of success as her colleagues.
‘She wants to be a star, and the fact she isn’t as big as Sydney and Zendaya does bug her.’
Demie stepped back onto the red carpet on Tuesday for the premiere of Euphoria’s third season. At the event, held at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, she wore a classic Bob Mackie dress, but it was her dramatically different look that really caught everyone’s attention.
Okay, so I’m totally obsessed with Alexa Demie, right? And when we last saw her as Maddy in Euphoria back in 2022, she was always serving looks – super sleek black hair, full glam, the whole thing. But seriously, I almost didn’t recognize her this week! She completely switched it up, ditching her straight hair and dark makeup for this really fresh, natural vibe. It’s amazing – she looks incredible either way, but this new look is just…wow.
Okay, so I’ve been following Alexa Demie obsessively, and I heard something wild. Apparently, all the buzz about her red carpet look wasn’t just happenstance! Some people are saying it was totally strategic – a way to get everyone talking about her again. Honestly, it makes so much sense! She’s brilliant, and I’m glad whatever they did is working – she deserves all the attention!
According to a source, she thoroughly enjoyed the premiere and is eager to audition for more roles. She was pleased with the positive comments about her changed appearance, as she wants to demonstrate her versatility and ability to transform for future characters.
She’s determined to stay in Hollywood and is aiming to become as famous, or even more famous, than the actors she works with.
Demie has recently been in the spotlight due to reported conflicts with her ‘Euphoria’ co-star, Sydney Sweeney, and speculation about tension within the show’s cast.
After the premiere on Tuesday, a video of Alexa Demie and Sydney Sweeney on the red carpet sparked rumors that they were no longer close.
In the video, Sydney Sweeney briefly stopped Demie’s red carpet interview to give her a hug. They exchanged quick greetings, and Sweeney complimented Demie, telling her she looked ‘amazing’.
However, fans in the comments section described the moment as ‘awkward’ and ‘fake’.
Even though Sydney Sweeney and Alexa Demie appeared friendly at the Euphoria premiere, a source says they weren’t actually close and didn’t like each other.
According to a source, Alexa and Sydney can tolerate being in the same room when necessary, but they generally try to avoid each other while filming.
It was clear those two didn’t get along at all. They weren’t friends, and there was no chance of that changing. The rest of the cast, including Zendaya, stayed neutral and didn’t get involved in their conflict. Everyone simply accepted the situation as it was.
Oh my gosh, before Alexa Demie blew everyone away as Maddy, can you believe she was designing sunglasses? It’s just… incredible! She grew up in Atwater Village, which is such a cool part of LA, with just her mom, Rose Mendez. Rose is a makeup artist – seriously talented! – and she actually came to the US from Mexico as a baby. It just makes Alexa even more inspiring, knowing her background and everything she’s achieved!
Demie has spoken to InStyle about their incredibly close bond, describing their mother as the most important person in their life. This is remarkable considering Demie’s mother was very young when she had them and didn’t receive any emotional or financial help from her own family.
Though she plays the popular cheerleader Maddy on Euphoria, Alexa Demie revealed to Wonderland Magazine that she actually experienced bullying throughout her school years, from elementary through high school.
When Demie was in high school, she started a business buying sunglasses in bulk and decorating them with rhinestones. She sold these designs at a store on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, which eventually grew into her sunglasses brand, Mainframe. Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Nicki Minaj later wore her creations.
Demie found her school’s performing arts program, but she didn’t become truly interested in acting until she starred in a short film made by a friend.
In 2015, she landed the main role in a movie called The Godmother, a planned film about the life of drug lord Griselda Blanco. Although the movie was ultimately cancelled, the experience helped her secure representation and start auditioning for other parts.
Demie has talked about feeling extremely anxious before auditions and expressed her disappointment with the lack of opportunities for Latina actresses in Hollywood.
She explained that she almost stopped acting because Latina women are often passed over for main roles in the entertainment industry.
She explained on The A24 Podcast in 2020 that she improved at auditioning simply by doing so many of them – it became second nature with practice.
She remembered feeling completely fed up and losing interest in continuing with it.
Demie shared that she often felt discouraged in auditions, particularly because many leading roles seemed to go to actresses with blonde hair and blue eyes. She noted that it’s a common experience for actors to feel like something positive happens just when they’re about to give up, and she believes that held true for her as well.
She explained that she didn’t usually expect to be considered for leading roles, noting that actresses of mixed or Latin heritage are rarely cast in those positions. She admitted it was discouraging to repeatedly face rejection and felt frustrated by constantly being told ‘no’.
From 2016 to 2019, she landed minor roles on television shows like Ray Donovan and The OA, and also appeared in independent films including Brigsby Bear and Mid90s.
Although she wasn’t chosen for director Augustine Frizzell’s 2018 movie, Never Goin’ Back, Frizzell reached out to her later with an audition opportunity for Euphoria, which Frizzell was directing the first episode of.
Demie was thinking about giving up acting to focus on her music career. She first released the single ‘Girl Like Me’ in 2016, and later followed it up with ‘Leopard Limo’ in 2021.
But she knew the role of Maddy in Euphoria was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up.
According to Alexa Demie on The A24 Podcast, the show Euphoria was a turning point, specifically because of the intense emotional experience it offered viewers.
The first season of Euphoria was a big hit, attracting an average of 6.6 million viewers across all platforms within its first three months. The second season, which premiered in January 2022, performed even better, becoming HBO’s second most-watched show with an average of 16.3 million viewers tuning in each week.
Although the show Euphoria was a hit, actress Sydney Sweeney’s career slowed down right after its second season. Since 2022, she’s only been in two projects: a small, uncredited part in HBO’s The Idol and an episode of comedian Julio Torres’ series, Fantasmas, which aired in 2024.
Demie seems to really value her privacy, which might explain why she hasn’t been in the public eye as much as other stars from Euphoria. She has 11 million Instagram followers, but her last post was back in August 2023.
In a 2019 interview with InStyle, she shared that she didn’t have many friends in high school, explaining it was due to her naturally introverted nature.
Demie explained she’s always been a very private person, a trait that started in high school. She believes this privacy contributed to her having few friends, as girls didn’t often talk to her.
You know, it’s funny. I used to get this reaction where people, after finally getting to know me, would be surprised I wasn’t mean or difficult! I think it’s because I’m naturally pretty introverted, especially when I first meet someone. I’m either very shy and quiet, or I’m super outgoing – there’s not much in between. But honestly, I’m just a friendly person who says hello!
As a result of her introverted ways, much of Demie’s dating life is also shrouded in mystery.
The actress and musician Christian Berishaj, who performs as JMSN, were reportedly together since 2017. She also appeared in the music video for his song ‘Slide’ that same year.
She made another cameo in the music video for his song ‘Act Like I’m Not Here’ in September 2021.
In October 2020, Hunter Schafer and Dominic Fike were seen swimming and holding hands on a Miami beach. Since then, they’ve kept their relationship very private.
Earlier this year, rumors spread that the couple had broken up after Berishaj unfollowed Demie on Instagram and removed all photos and videos of her from his account.
Last December, Berishaj hinted at their split during an interview, revealing he hadn’t gone on a date in nine years.
‘I was in a relationship for eight of them,’ he said in the clip.
However, Demie has not publicly commented on the status of her relationship.
Many online theories suggest the actress Demie is actually older than her stated age, sparking debate among fans.
When Euphoria debuted in 2019, some outlets had reported Demie was 24 years old.
People online found a list of Demie’s high school classmates, showing she graduated in 2008. This would mean she is currently 35 years old.
Demie has not publicly acknowledged speculation about her age.
At the premiere, she concurred with Zendaya, her co-star, that the third season of Euphoria will probably be the final one.
It’s unfortunate for Demie that the show she’s returning to is receiving very negative reviews. Critics have already described the first episode as a complete mess, and it currently has a low 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Demie for comment.
