The series Vladimir, created by Julia May Jonas (who also wrote the 2022 novel it’s based on), follows a college English professor in her fifties (Rachel Weisz) who develops a strong obsession with Vladimir Vladinski (Leo Woodall), a charismatic young novelist recently hired by her department. The title Vladimir is thought to be a reference to Vladimir Nabokov, author of Lolita, a connection Jonas has hinted at. She explained that she wanted to name the series after the object of the obsession, but from a woman’s point of view, flipping the traditional narrative.
Marlon Wayans, who stars in and co-wrote the new film, explained that it’s not just a return to spoof comedies, but an attempt to shake up today’s more careful approach to humor. He stated their goal is simply to make people laugh again, and to do that, they need to move beyond what he calls ‘cancel culture’ and allow for more freedom in comedy.
