Outlander's Caitríona Balfe talks us through season 7 episode 11 shocker: "Those scenes were really hard to film"

As a longtime Outlander fan with a heart full of Jamie and Claire shippers, I must confess that this week’s episode 11 left me utterly gobsmacked! The plot twist of season 7 has undeniably been one of the most jaw-dropping moments in the show’s history. And let me tell you, even Caitríona Balfe herself admitted it was a toughie to film.

This week’s installment of ‘Outlander’ Season 7 is not for the sensitive viewers, particularly those ardent supporters of Jamie and Claire. The occurrences in episode 11 titled “A Hundredweight Stones” are among the most startling plot developments ever witnessed on this series. And that’s quite a statement!

I’m overjoyed to share that earlier this year at New York Comic Con, I got the chance to chat with Caitríona Balfe herself about the mind-blowing twist in the storyline. To be honest, it’s been a struggle for us fans to process this shocking revelation. And let me tell you, she admitted it was just as challenging for her too. MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW.

Initially, I wasn’t concerned when Claire and Lord John tied the knot. I figured it was just for her safety, nothing more would come of it. Boy, was I mistaken! As a viewer who only follows the show, I never could have guessed what was in store.

Amidst their intense pain and turmoil, Claire and Lord John find themselves sharing a night together in an unexpected turn of events. Given the deep bond between Jamie and Claire, this choice seems uncharacteristic for Claire. Filming this surprising scene was quite challenging for Caitriona Balfe, as she revealed. Here’s what she had to say about this startling event:

Balfe explained that it wasn’t so much a decision as it was a mystery to her. She had the scripts and found herself puzzled by the character’s actions. As an actor, she needs to comprehend why her character behaves in certain ways. The concept of metaphysical love, the person, and the soulmate, along with the loss of that, led her character to where she is. It seemed like an unusual choice to Balfe. Fortunately, David Berry was very helpful because Balfe genuinely didn’t understand it; she kept asking herself, “How could this happen?

My partner and I collaborated on this project, and we also worked alongside Vanessa Coffey, our exceptional intimacy coordinator, as well as Lisa Clarke, our director. Our characters were deeply distressed individuals grappling with pain and grief, and to ease their suffering, they turned to excessive drinking. The scenes weren’t about pleasure or sexuality; rather, they represented a primal desire to alleviate their pain. It was a challenging experience filming these sequences, but I believe David delivered an exceptional performance, and together we produced the best possible interpretation of those moments.

As an Outlander fan, I wholeheartedly concur with her points and she does an excellent job expressing them! It seems we’re all sailing the same stormy seas. To add fuel to the fire, Jamie returns (hooray!) and we’ll have to sit on pins and needles until next week to witness the fallout when he discovers the truth about Claire and Frank. Not only are his wife and dearest friend married, but they even shared a bed. That’s going to be one bitter pill for him to swallow.

You may recall our exclusive chat with Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe hinting at tension between their characters? That’s because of the startling events unfolding in this episode! Don’t forget to catch the complete interview for more insights into next week’s season 7, episode 12. I’m really excited about it!
