Caitríona Balfe, known for her role in Outlander, is set to star in a new romance drama with a dark and intriguing storyline. The film is inspired by the classic novel Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and will begin filming on February 9th.
Uma Thurman and Phoebe Dynevor, who were formerly attached to the project, are no longer appearing.
According to Deadline, Balfe will star alongside Helena Bonham Carter, Emma Laird (known for her roles in The Brutalist and 28 Years Later), and Anthony Hopkins in a new film. The movie is based on a short story and upcoming novel by Rose Tremain, published by Penguin Random House UK and Harper Collins US.
What to Read Next
The movie The Housekeeper takes place in the dramatic scenery of Cornwall. Balfe stars as Dannie, the housekeeper for the grand Manderville Hall, a stately home owned by the rich widower, Lord Grenville-Whithers. Does this plot seem a little familiar?
When the aspiring author Daphne du Maurier arrives, Danni finds herself caught up in a secret and passionate romance. For one of them, it’s a total obsession; for the other, it sparks feelings they’ve kept hidden for years.
A delicate secret is at risk of being exposed, especially with Adelaide (Bonham Carter), Lord Grenville-Whithers’ shrewd niece, closely observing everything.
The upcoming romance is directed by Sir Richard Eyre, a highly acclaimed filmmaker known for movies like The Children Act, Notes on a Scandal, and King Lear starring Denzel Washington. Eyre stated that Rose Tremain’s screenplay is captivating, full of twists, and intriguing, and he’s excited to create a film that does it justice.
Producer Herbert L Kloiber believes The Housekeeper will captivate viewers with its combination of romance, sophistication, and genuine emotion, thanks to Rose Tremain’s beautiful writing and Richard Eyre’s skilled direction.

The impressive cast we’ve assembled is a testament to both Rose’s captivating story and Richard’s reputation as one of Britain’s top directors,” said producer Julia Taylor-Stanley. “We’re thrilled to be collaborating with such talented people to bring this powerful story to life on screen.”
This year looks to be filled with intense and dramatic stories, and the new film Wuthering Heights, featuring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, is already capturing audiences with its passionate and heartbreaking tale.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a vibrant 100-page magazine dedicated to Taylor Swift, is now available! You can find it at newsagents or order it online for only £8.99.
