As a devoted fan who has been following Only Murders in the Building since its inception, I must say that this season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! Each week, I eagerly await the latest episode, and this penultimate one did not disappoint. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat and left me craving for more.

As we approach the end of Only Murders in the Building ‘s fourth season, the second to last episode certainly didn’t fail to keep viewers engaged, offering a thrilling ride filled with unexpected plot developments and numerous exciting turns.

Before diving into the upcoming twists and surprises, I must issue a caution: This discussion may contain spoilers from episode 9 of season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building”. Given that there were numerous major revelations in this episode, if you prefer not to learn about them before watching, it would be best for us to part ways here.

Following the hint dropped last week about Glen being Sazz’s apprentice, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel hurriedly make their way to the hospital, eager to ask him more about it. Regrettably, he remains unconscious, and the nurse declines to allow them access to his room. However, she promises to reach out to them as soon as he regains consciousness.

Upon exiting, they run into the bartender from Concussions who discloses to them that Glen wasn’t actually Sazz’s apprentice. Instead, Glen was brought in for Project Ronkonkoma due to his previous apprentice’s severe mistakes, which led to their expulsion. They query him about Sazz’s apprentice and he mentions that only Sazz, Glen, and the film’s director, Ron Howard (yes, the famous Ron Howard) are privy to the apprentice’s identity.

The killer strikes again

After Sazz’s demise and Glen being in a coma, the Murder Mystery Squad reconvenes, brainstorming ways to contact Ron Howard. Oliver shares that he has a past connection with Ron, but Mabel and Charles are skeptical, leading Mabel to arrange a meeting with Bev, hoping she can help establish contact with Ron. Fortunately, it’s discovered that Ron is currently in New York filming a new movie, and Bev willingly provides the necessary details, on the condition that Mabel assists her in reviewing the latest script revisions with Marshall.

The Murder Investigation team makes their way towards the filming location with the intention of talking to Ron, but they are blocked by security guards. Fortunately, they manage to gain access by pretending to audition as extras. Meanwhile, they secretly prepare while hidden backstage. In the midst of these preparations, Mabel receives a call from the hospital informing her that Glen has arrived, prompting her to rush there immediately.

Regrettably, before Mabel could reach the hospital, an unidentified individual entered Glen’s room and suffocated him with a pillow. This revelation left Mabel in shock, but her surprise lessened when the nurse disclosed that she had not only contacted Mabel, but also Glen’s emergency contact – Sazz. However, it turned out that the person who picked up the call was not Sazz, but another man instead.

While Mabel’s investigating Glen’s murder, Charles and Oliver are unexpectedly dismissed from the film set before they could talk to Ron. After their argument on set about Charles finding Oliver too demanding during his bachelor party preparations, they instead go to Oliver’s preferred Chinese restaurant for reconciliation. There, they patch things up as Charles apologizes for calling Oliver ‘insufferable’. In a heartfelt moment, Oliver expresses that he doesn’t actually want a bachelor party but desires Charles as his best man instead.

Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 9 ending explained: Who is Sazz’s protege?

As Oliver and Charles savor their meal, Ron Howard enters and identifies Oliver, choosing to sit with them. This moment provides an opportunity for them to inquire about Sazz’s apprentice. At this point, Ron is able to clarify the fragmented flashback scenes from the episode showing Sazz mentoring her protege. It transpires that Sazz encountered her apprentice when she accidentally hit him with her car while reversing. She then invited him to collaborate on Project Ronkonkoma and guided him through a fire performance, a memory Ron recalls going well. However, it was right after he shouted “cut” that things took an unexpected turn.

In a turn of events, Ron found out that after his command “cut”, his protégé didn’t wait for the flames to fully die down. When Ron approached him later to review his script, the flames unexpectedly reignited and sparks scorched Ron’s eyebrows. Following this incident, the protégé was dismissed from work, and it was revealed that he had taken Ron’s boots – footwear with a pattern matching the one found in Dudenoff’s apartment. But who is this enigmatic protégé? His name is Rex Bailey, who interestingly enough, is none other than Marshal, the writer of the Only Murders movie.

While Ron discusses recent events on Project Ronkonkoma with Oliver and Charles, Mabel returns to her apartment, finding Marshall there. Eager for conversation about the script, they engage. Initially resistant due to Glen’s passing, Mabel eventually concedes and assists Marshall in reviewing the script.

When Mabel retrieves a beer from the cooler that Sazz had brought to Oliver’s on the night of his death, she stumbles upon an unexpected revelation: hidden among the bottles, she finds a script for the Only Murder movie, bearing Sazz Tataki’s name. As Mabel queries Marshall about why the script is credited to Sazz, her phone suddenly vibrates with a message from Charles, revealing that Marshall is actually Sazz’s apprentice.

As the episode concludes, viewers are left with numerous unanswered questions as we approach the finale. Is it possible that Marshall is the real murderer, and has he been targeting the Only Murders crew? What was his motive for killing Sazz? And what surprises do we have in store as the season reaches its end? Tune in on October 29 to discover the answers!
