Generally, a comic book needs to be very popular before it gets made into a movie. The 1995 film Tank Girl, starring Lori Petty, Naomi Watts, Ice-T, and Malcolm McDowell, seemed to prove that point – it wasn’t a success with critics or at the box office. However, surprisingly, over the last thirty years, the film, directed by Rachel Talalay, has gained a dedicated cult following that few people would have predicted at the time of its release.
Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett first created Tank Girl while working on another comic book. She first appeared in Deadline in October 1988, which became her home for the comic’s run until 1995. Tank Girl quickly became a popular figure in British punk rock and queer culture, and her image was later used in protests against Margaret Thatcher’s Section 28 law – a ruling that prohibited intentionally promoting homosexuality. Decades after its release, the Tank Girl movie, like many comics adapted to film in the 1990s, gained a devoted cult following.
Tank Girl Was an Ambitious, Early Comic Book Film That Failed Critically and Commercially
Tank Girl isn’t really a hero; she’s more of a chaotic force, driving across a desolate landscape with her kangaroo-like partner, Booga, and leaving mayhem behind. The comics are deliberately messy, self-aware, and full of unexpected twists. Because the series doesn’t follow many rules, its playful treatment of established lore and character personalities actually feels true to its spirit. Despite this, creators Martin and Hewlett managed to get it published, though finding a studio willing to distribute such a strange and boisterous comic was a real challenge.
Talalay stated she thinks about an hour of footage was removed from the final cut of the film. She said many of these cuts were done without her approval, and some scenes were replaced with animated sequences inspired by comic books. The movie initially began with a scene of a comet striking Earth, which caused a never-ending drought. The original ending featured the downfall of the “Water and Power” company, the first rain after the disaster, and Tank Girl letting out a burp. One executive reportedly pressured Talalay to make changes while experiencing discomfort.
The film Tank Girl closely mirrored its comic book source material, prioritizing over-the-top action and a loose plot. Despite a large budget, it only earned $4 million in theaters. Ironically, the very things critics disliked – its fast pace, quirky style, and unusual acting – are what helped it become a beloved cult film.
It’s Not a Surprise That Tank Girl Developed a Cult Following
Looking back at Tank Girl and her journey to save herself, it’s worth noting that even in 1995, it was unusual to have a woman as the main hero. Tank Girl’s story follows a classic heroic pattern, but her response to difficult events – like environmental disasters, loss, or even torture – is over-the-top and comical. Some viewers mistakenly saw this playful attitude as a lack of caring.
Near the end of the movie, Tank Girl turns down a conventional look and creates her own unique style. This scene, shown quickly with humorous editing, is a key moment for her character. When Tank Girl first came out in theaters, audiences were confused by it, and it only played for about ten days. This meant many people who would have enjoyed it didn’t get to see it. Luckily, the film found a larger audience when it was released on home video.
It’s fitting that Tank Girl found its audience later on, given how bold and unconventional it was. Audiences may simply be more receptive to its unique storytelling now, especially with more open conversations about challenging topics. This movie, though released some time ago, still feels relevant and proves there’s always a place for entertainment that isn’t afraid to speak its mind. It truly embodies the spirit of a ‘cult classic‘ – a film that gains a dedicated following despite, or perhaps because of, not being mainstream.
Tank Girl Is a Manic, Misunderstood, Feminist Piece Of Media
The R-rating for Tank Girl is a mixed bag. It allowed the film to be daring, but it didn’t quite live up to expectations as a truly edgy comedy. The film’s environmental themes were fairly simple, and the villains, particularly McDowell’s performance, were over-the-top and cartoonish. In terms of style, mood, and structure, Tank Girl feels more like a 1960s psychedelic film than a 1990s comedy. However, the strong female characters and their frank sexuality, humor, and attitude were unusual for the time and still stand out today. While the film tries to address important issues and represent marginalized groups, these themes could have been explored with more depth.
What sets Tank Girl apart as a beloved cult classic is its refusal to hold back – its characters are funny, provocative, and often outrageous. At the time, a woman like Tank Girl was a bold departure from typical portrayals, and many viewers found her character empowering. The film embraces the wild, over-the-top energy of the comic book source material, from Tank Girl’s tank to the kangaroo rebels, and celebrates a rebellious, punk attitude. Though toned down somewhat from the comics, Tank Girl remains a boundary-pushing film that’s also surprisingly fun and lighthearted.
