The 1990s were a fantastic time for fantasy television, with popular shows like Xena: Warrior Princess, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Charmed. Now, three decades later, one of these classic series is finding huge success again thanks to streaming.
Per FlixPatrol, is currently the No. 10 most-watched show on Paramount+ worldwide. The series is trending in countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Mexico, and holds the No. 8 spot in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Chile. Sabrina the Teenage Witch debuted on September 27, 1996, on ABC and was the highest-rated series among the network’s TGIF line-up.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch Was Based on a Comic Book Series
of the same name, but changed one major aspect from the story. In the TV fantasy sitcom, Sabrina only learns about her powers on her 16th birthday, unlike in the original comic book series. She must then learn to use her powers and solve the family secret to earn her witch’s license.
But life isn’t quite as easy for Sabrina. The show features her struggling to keep her magical powers a secret from her mortal friends and love interest, while also living with her two aunts, who are also witches, and a hilarious, wisecracking, 500-year-old warlock who was sentenced to live as a cat after trying to take over the world.
I absolutely loved Sabrina the Teenage Witch! Melissa Joan Hart was perfect as Sabrina, and Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick were hilarious as her aunts, Hilda and Zelda. Let’s not forget Salem, the sassy talking cat – Nick Bakay totally nailed the voice work! And of course, Nate Richert played Harvey Kinkle, Sabrina’s sweet boyfriend and friend. It was such a great cast!
The show included a number of memorable recurring characters, such as Jenna Leigh Green as Libby Chessler, Sabrina’s high school rival, Michelle Beaudoin as Jenny Kelley, Sabrina’s best friend during the first season, and Lindsay Sloane as Valerie Birkhead, another close friend. Paul Feig also appeared as Mr. Eugene Pool, Sabrina’s biology teacher for a season.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch Spawned Many Spin-Offs
The popularity of Sabrina the Teenage Witch led to several spin-off shows. These included the animated prequel Sabrina: The Animated Series in 1999, followed by Sabrina: Friends Forever in 2002 and Sabrina’s Secret Life in 2003. Another animated series, Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch, premiered in 2013, featuring Ashley Tisdale as the voice of Sabrina Spellman.
In 2018, the show Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premiered. It wasn’t a remake of the earlier Sabrina the Teenage Witch series, but a new take on the characters from an Archie Comics horror comic book. The show featured Kiernan Shipka in the lead role as Sabrina Spellman.
It’s safe to say that Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a hit and a cultural phenomenon, making the beloved Archie Comics characters part of pop culture worldwide. And more than 20 years after the series’ finale, Melissa Joan Hart’s fantasy series remains one of the , and a hit on streaming.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch is available to stream on Paramount+.
