It’s Officially The End Of An Era For Harry Potter

The world of Harry Potter is moving into a new phase, bringing its current run to a close. For more than twenty years, the Harry Potter films have been the main way people have experienced the Wizarding World. While the movies were based on the popular Harry Potter books – which already guaranteed a large and loyal fanbase – the film series became a global success all on its own.

The enduring popularity of the Wizarding World extends beyond the films themselves. The Harry Potter theme parks found around the world recreate iconic movie locations, including the Hogwarts Express, Hogwarts castle, Hogsmeade, and Diagon Alley. Similarly, video games like Hogwarts Legacy draw heavily on the films’ visual style and designs.

The Fantastic Beasts films were designed to expand the world of the popular Harry Potter movies with a story set earlier in time, demonstrating the huge success of the originals. Unfortunately, Fantastic Beasts didn’t achieve the same level of popularity Warner Bros. hoped for, creating some doubt about the future of the series. Despite this, the original Harry Potter films continued to be widely enjoyed.

As a huge fan, I’m both excited and a little sad to see the original films winding down, but 2026 is going to bring a whole new chapter! The first season of the Harry Potter TV series is coming to HBO Max, and it’s going to start right back at the beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Everything is fresh – new actors, completely new sets, and a design that promises to be even more true to the books than the movies were. Honestly, it feels like this show is aiming to be the defining version of Harry Potter for a new generation, and I can’t wait!

The show is planned to last seven seasons, one for each of the original Harry Potter books, making it a ten-year project similar to the movie series. For the next decade, HBO’s series will be the main way fans experience the wizarding world, signaling the end of the movie franchise’s run.

HBO’s Recent Marketing Proves A New Era Of Harry Potter Is Here

Starting in 2026, HBO began heavily promoting its upcoming TV series, including the Harry Potter show. In May 2026, they released a trailer called “Coming Soon” that gave viewers a glimpse of several projects, such as the DC series Lanterns and season 3 of House of the Dragon. The trailer featured quick clips of these shows and more, but the Harry Potter series stood out. The trailer ended with a special sneak peek at Harry Potter, leaving fans with a final, intriguing look.

The trailer clarifies that the Harry Potter series will be available on HBO Max this Christmas. The preview is a bit longer than those for other shows, highlighting how much HBO is investing in this new series.

The show’s visuals clearly differ from the films, particularly during the Quidditch scenes, which have a unique style. Since Quidditch was less prominent in the movies than in the books, it’s logical that this new Harry Potter series – aiming to include more elements from the books – is giving Quidditch a more central role.

This all demonstrates HBO’s plan to launch a new chapter with Harry Potter. As the December 2026 release date nears, any trailers or news we see will probably reinforce this idea, effectively ending the film series and ushering in what’s expected to be a long-lasting TV show legacy.
