YouTube just scored an action classic.
Action movies are always changing. In the early 1980s, they often featured incredibly strong heroes like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone who seemed invincible. The film Die Hard in 1988 shifted things by introducing a more relatable hero, John McClane, played by Bruce Willis. He still fought a lot of villains, but he was much more vulnerable. More recently, the John Wick films have brought a new, stylish type of action to the genre, though older action classics remain popular with audiences.
The action classic, released in 1997, is now available to watch for free on YouTube – no subscription needed! However, this offer is currently only available to viewers in the United States. The film was directed by John Woo.
The action movie Face/Off has a truly unique plot. Nicolas Cage and John Travolta star as enemies who undergo a radical surgery to swap faces. FBI agent Sean Archer (Travolta) takes on the appearance of dangerous terrorist Castor Troy (Cage) to stop a planned attack. However, when Troy recovers and steals Archer’s face, the two men are locked in a life-or-death struggle to get their original appearances back.
Audiences loved the clever idea behind Face/Off, and the film became a major financial success, earning $245 million worldwide despite costing only $80 million to make. It was also well-received by critics, who praised its stylish visuals and director John Woo’s over-the-top action sequences. Currently, Face/Off holds a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences scoring it slightly lower at 82%.
Before directing Face/Off, John Woo had already become well-known for films like The Killer (1989), Bullet in the Head (1990), Hard Boiled (1992), and Hard Target (1993). His action scenes are famous for being highly dramatic, using lots of slow motion and a unique style called “bullet ballet,” where gunfights look like elaborate dances.
Both John Travolta and Nicolas Cage were enjoying career revivals when Face/Off came out. Travolta had first become a star in the 1970s with hits like Saturday Night Fever and Grease, but he regained major success in the ’90s thanks to films like Pulp Fiction, Get Shorty, and Broken Arrow.
Nicolas Cage first earned critical acclaim and an Oscar for his role in Leaving Las Vegas (1995), but then became known for starring in action films. Besides Face/Off, he headlined popular movies like The Rock (1996) and Con Air (1997) during the late 1990s.
A sequel to Face/Off has been planned for years, but it’s faced difficulties getting made. Adam Wingard, who directed Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, was originally set to direct, but he left the project earlier in 2024. Now, Paramount is looking at ideas from other directors.
Despite starring in many films since, Face/Off is still considered a standout movie for John Woo, John Travolta, and Nicolas Cage. Because it came out some time ago, a new generation of viewers might not have seen it yet. Now that it’s available to watch for free on YouTube, the movie could gain even more fans.
