Olivia Dean says ‘I’m a granddaughter of an immigrant’ and insists ‘those people deserve to be celebrated’ in impassioned speech as she wins Best New Artist at 2026 Grammys

Olivia Dean was among the many stars who used their Grammy win on Sunday night to celebrate immigrants. She received her first Grammy Award at the 2026 ceremony in Los Angeles.

The 26-year-old British singer won a major award – Best New Artist – and used her acceptance speech to powerfully express her views.

She won against a strong group of competitors, including Addison Rae, KATSEYE, The Marias, sombr, Leon Thomas, Alex Warren, and another performer from the UK, Lola Young.

Accepting the award from last year’s winner, Chappell Roan, Olivia Rodrigo dedicated her win to her family and spoke about the current issues with ICE, sharing that she is the granddaughter of an immigrant.

‘I wouldn’t be here… I’m a product of bravery, and I think those people deserve to be celebrated.

‘So yeah, we are nothing without each other. Thank you so much. I love you. Thank you so much.’

Olivia’s grandmother moved to the UK from Guyana when she was 18, as part of the Windrush Generation during World War II. Olivia’s family background is a mix of Jamaican and English heritage.

Last year, she released her second album, The Art Of Loving, which included popular songs like “So Easy,” “The Hardest Part,” and “Man I Need.” She performed these songs at the ceremony.

This songwriter joins a prestigious list of rising stars, following in the footsteps of previous winners like Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, Dua Lipa, and Olivia Rodrigo.

Olivia wasn’t alone in speaking out against ICE and the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies at the Grammys on Sunday. Many other stars also used the event to voice their opposition.

Several artists at the awards show, such as Joni Mitchell, Kehlani, and Justin and Hailey Bieber, wore ‘ICE OUT’ pins to protest actions taken by a controversial agency. This protest followed the deaths of Keith Porter in Los Angeles and Renée Good and Alex Pretti, a nurse in Minneapolis, all at the hands of the agency’s agents.

Bad Bunny was the night’s biggest winner, delivering a moving message while accepting the award for Album of the Year for his record, DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS.

The 31-year-old Puerto Rican singer, a global star, said she wanted to give this award to everyone who left their home country to pursue their dreams.

During the awards ceremony, he made two powerful statements against ICE. After winning Best Música Urbana Album, his first words were, ‘Before thanking God, let’s say, ICE Out.’

The crowd gave him a huge round of applause before he went on to emphasize that immigrants and Puerto Ricans are not dangerous, inhuman, or foreign – they are Americans.

Bad Bunny, whose full name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, went on to encourage everyone to avoid letting hate control their lives.

Honestly, everything he says just hits different. He was talking about how negativity just feeds itself, you know? Like, the more people hate, the stronger it gets. But then he said something amazing – he said love is even stronger than hate! It totally changed my perspective. He was begging us to be better, to choose a different path. He said if we have to fight for something, it needs to be done with love. It’s just… everything he says feels so important, and I really want to live by that. I need to live by that.

It’s not about disliking others, it’s about cherishing our own community and families, and approaching everything with love. Please remember that. Thank you, and thank you to God and The Academy.

Earlier in the evening, Billie Eilish shared similar feelings when she and her brother, FINNEAS, won Song of the Year for their song, WILDFLOWER.

During her speech, the 24-year-old singer encouraged people to protest against the current political climate, stating, ‘Despite my gratitude, I believe it’s important to remember that no one is illegal on land that was taken from others.’

It’s tough to know how to react right now, but I’m feeling optimistic being here with everyone. I think the most important thing is to continue to advocate for what we believe in and make our voices heard through action and protest.

What people think and feel is truly important, and that’s the main thing I want to express. I don’t have anything else to add right now. Thank you, and I’m still processing all of this.

To make her point absolutely clear, she finished her message by shouting an expletive directed at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) before leaving the stage. CBS censored the moment.

The performance was clearly well-received by the crowd at Crypto.com Arena, with many people cheering and applauding, and some even standing up to show their support.

Billie’s acceptance speech mirrored one Kehlani had given earlier, before the show officially started. This came after Billie, a seven-time nominee, finally won two awards in a row: Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song.

Following the usual expressions of gratitude, she addressed the second Trump administration’s efforts to restrict immigration, highlighting the significant increase in ICE’s authority and funding.

You know, one thing I always want to emphasize is just how much power each of us holds. And when we come together, when we support each other, that power multiplies. It’s incredibly important right now, with everything happening in the world, that we use our collective voice to stand up for what’s right and fight against injustice.

I’m hoping we can all come together as artists, not just a few individuals, and make our voices heard about these important issues.

Okay, so after Billie finished, she just blurted out – and honestly, it was amazing – ‘I’m out, but seriously, screw ICE!’ It was so unexpected and perfect, I think I actually screamed. She just gets it, you know? It was such a powerful moment, and I’m obsessed.

Kendrick Lamar won Record of the Year, a major award, for his song “luther” featuring SZA.

During the awards show, a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, who recently passed away six months ago, moved his family in the audience to tears.

Slash and Post Malone kicked off the tribute by playing Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” with Chad Smith, Duff McKagan, and Andrew Watt.

Sharon Osbourne, along with her children Jack and Kelly, were in the audience and appeared deeply touched.

Trevor Noah hosted the annual Friends of the Global Fight gala for the sixth year in a row on Sunday, but announced it would be his last time. The comedian, known for previously hosting The Daily Show, stated he plans to step down from the role.
