Olivia Colman’s forgotten period detective drama branded ‘excellent whodunnit’ gets new UK home

I just found out a really cool British murder mystery from 2013 is now streaming! It stars Olivia Colman, and Paddy Considine – you might know him from House of the Dragon – plays the lead detective. I’m definitely checking it out!

This TV series is based on the true story of Constance Kent, as detailed in Kate Summerscale’s 2008 book, The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: The Murder at Road Hill House. However, later episodes move away from the original case.

Neil McKay wrote The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: The Murder in Angel Lane, which aired in 2013. It’s a sequel to the 2011 story, The Murder at Road Hill House, and once again stars Considine as Mr Whicher, this time as a private detective.

You can now stream The Murder in Angel Lane on Prime Video in the UK. This new installment features detective Jack Whicher as he investigates the disappearance of 16-year-old Mary Drew, who is pregnant, at the request of the affluent Susan Spencer (played by Olivia Colman).

After Mary’s death shortly after giving birth to a son, Spencer secretly hires Whicher to investigate the circumstances.

The cast also includes William Beck as Chief Inspector Williamson, Tim Pigott-Smith as Commissioner Mayne, Shaun Dingwall as Inspector Lock, and William Postlethwaite, Mark Bazeley, Sean Baker, and Alistair Petrie playing Stephen, Thomas, Joshua Gann, and Dr. Casement respectively.

The latest Mr Whicher film hasn’t been reviewed by critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but viewers gave it a 66% rating according to the site’s audience score.

The film has received positive feedback from over 100 viewers, who describe it as a well-made and enjoyable mystery.

British filmmakers excel at historical dramas, and this mystery is a prime example – enjoyable both when it was first released and for modern audiences. It’s a gripping story that blends personal relationships with a compelling crime, unfolding at a satisfying pace.

Some viewers found the ending unsatisfying and felt it didn’t fully resolve the story, leaving certain plot points unanswered.

One viewer said the movie started strong and grabbed their attention for about the first forty minutes, but ultimately felt it didn’t live up to its potential. They criticized the movie’s short length and found the ending unsatisfying, with loose ends and unanswered questions that left them wondering what the point was.

After the success of The Murder in Angel Lane, two more TV movies featuring Mr. Whicher were released in 2014: Beyond the Pale and The Ties that Bind.

The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: The Murder in Angel Lane is streaming on Prime Video in the UK.
