Odeon to close two London cinemas this week

As a lifelong cinema enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the magic of silver screens, I find myself saddened by the news that Odeon Cinemas is set to close its Covent Garden and Surrey Quays branches.

It’s said that Odeon Cinemas will be shutting down its Covent Garden and Surrey Quays locations within the next fortnight.

Initially, the closure we’re discussing is situated at Covent Garden, a location set to close permanently on August 8th. Earlier reports by Time Out disclosed that there were plans to transform this building once more into a theater in the West End.

For more than half a century, the structure that used to be the Saville Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue has served primarily as a movie theater.

Plans that have been talked about involve Cirque du Soleil, who are considering using the site as their permanent home. They envision a 400-seat theater below the structure and a boutique hotel situated on its upper floors.

Although the cinema chain hasn’t officially announced it, it appears that disheartened movie enthusiast Steve Scarebear may have shared the news through a post on X.

After confirming the rumors by personally checking out ODEON Cinemas Covent Garden, he wrote: “Unfortunately, my earlier post was correct. I’ve just confirmed that it will indeed close this Thursday. The location has been bought and is set to be transformed into a luxury hotel and theater. On a positive note, the staff are being reassigned elsewhere. It’s quite sad.”

As reported by Southwark News, it’s confirmed that the Surrey Quays cinema will close for good this coming Sunday, August 18.

“According to information received from our property owner, ODEON Surrey Quays is scheduled to shut down due to their intention to revamp the entertainment complex. The theater will officially close on August 18th, as announced by the cinema company.”

1. “Our primary focus is backing our team, and we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional work done by our coworkers at the movie theater over the past years. We’re aiming to offer jobs to as many of them as feasible in our other nearby theaters. We regret any inconvenience this may bring to our patrons.”

As a movie enthusiast, I was among those let down when Cineworld recently declared the shutdown of 25 of their cinemas last month, which is roughly a fourth of their total locations.
