‘Obsession’ Breakout Star Michael Johnston Reportedly in Talks to Join ‘The Mummy 4’

Summary

Michael Johnston, who recently gained attention in the horror film ‘Obsession,’ is being considered to star in the next ‘Mummy’ movie. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are returning for the fourth installment, along with John Hannah, over two decades after the first film came out in 1999. The directors behind Radio Silence – Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – are at the helm, and the movie is scheduled to hit theaters on October 15, 2027.

Michael Johnston, who recently starred in the popular horror movie Obsession, is being considered for a role in the next Mummy film from Universal. While Universal hasn’t confirmed the news or what part he might play, this could be a big break for the up-and-coming actor in a well-known adventure series.

This deal would put Johnston in charge of a franchise with a strong track record at the box office. The Mummy films have earned around $1.8 billion worldwide, starting with Stephen Sommers’ 1999 hit and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns – both of which made over $400 million globally. The series later expanded with the Dwayne Johnson spin-off, The Scorpion King, and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. These films were known for their large-scale adventures and played a key role in launching Brendan Fraser’s career as the charismatic adventurer, Rick O’Connell.

The latest film heavily relies on the fond memories fans have of the original. Brendan Fraser is back, alongside Rachel Weisz as Evelyn, and John Hannah will once again play Jonathan Carnahan, bringing the main three actors together over 25 years after the first movie came out. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for directing Ready or Not and recent Scream films, are directing, with a script written by David Coggeshall. Sean Daniel, who has produced all of the films since 1999, is also returning to help maintain the series’ established history.

I’m really excited about what Tyler Johnston brings to this revival! Unlike some of the other actors they’ve been looking at, he feels like a real breath of fresh air. He actually worked as an actor for almost fifteen years – I even remember seeing him on Teen Wolf back in the day – but it was his role in Obsession that really put him on the map. That movie was insane! Made on such a tiny budget, only around $750,000, and then it went on to make over $458 million worldwide—it’s Focus Features’ biggest hit ever. He played this character named Bear, a guy desperate for love who makes some really bad choices, and his performance was so captivating. Now everyone in Hollywood is taking notice of him, and I can totally see why!

If the deal goes through, he’d join a cast that includes both familiar faces from the original series and some of today’s rising stars – a mix the new movie seems to be aiming for. Currently, discussions are still ongoing, and details about his role haven’t been finalized. Filming is expected to start shortly, with a planned release in theaters later on.
