Oblivion Remastered: No Mod Support, What a Shock!

Bethesda’s RPGs are renowned for their robust mod support, but The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered marks a departure from a fundamental characteristic that has made modding so effective in games like Morrowind and Fallout. Since Morrowind, titles in the Elder Scrolls series have been developed using Gamebryo or its successor, the Creation Engine, maintaining a continuous lineage of flexibility. However, Oblivion Remastered shifts to Unreal Engine 5, which frees it from some of the Creation Engine’s constraints while introducing fresh challenges.

In the past, Bethesda has stirred up the modding community with a remaster, and Skyrim – Special Edition broke compatibility with many older mods. While changing the engine wasn’t typically necessary for converting projects to Special Edition, it was generally feasible, and numerous popular mods now cater to the Special Edition rather than the original game. However, it seems that the modding scene for Oblivion Remastered might not enjoy the same straightforward approach as previous Bethesda games.

Bethesda Might Be Breaking Tradition

According to Bethesda’s official help center, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered does not offer mod support. Although it’s plausible that mods may still be developed for the PC version of the game, they won’t receive the same level of backing as other Bethesda titles. This could restrict the scope and make comprehensive projects like those involving new narratives and environments less probable. Notably, Bethesda games have often bucked trends by enabling mods on consoles, but there will be no console mods for Oblivion Remastered without official support.

Will Mod Support Come To Oblivion Remastered Later On?

While Bethesda’s current notice on support doesn’t explicitly mention plans for mod support down the line, it’s worth noting that mod support can sometimes be added post-launch. For instance, mod support for Starfield was implemented several months after its release. The impressive response to Oblivion Remastered, reaching over 150,000 concurrent players on Steam shortly after its launch, might also influence Bethesda to prioritize mod support in the future.

In contrast to some situations, transitioning to Unreal Engine 5 reduces the probability, given that Bethesda’s custom Creation Kit template may not translate smoothly for their upcoming projects. For now, Bethesda advises removing mods and checking game files to ensure they function correctly on PC if any issues arise with them.
