Oblivion Remastered has a new texture error, and this one mucks up a gag from the original game

Identify and rectify the second texture issue in Oblivion Remastered‘s whizzbang skins: Players have reported that the game is now unplayable due to a new texture on the door to Cheydinhal’s Dark Brotherhood sanctuary, which inaccurately represents some of the sect’s background lore. Additionally, another issue has been discovered with one of the game’s shop signs not maintaining its humor in the transition to 4K resolution. It is essential to correct these errors to ensure a seamless gaming experience for players.

Reddit users with keen eyes (thanks to TheGamer) noticed that Lelles’ Quality Merchandise sign, a store on Anvil Waterfront in Oblivion Remastered, wasn’t perfectly transferred over. In the original 2006 game, it read ‘Lelles’ Quality Mercandise,’ with an extra H awkwardly placed between the C and the A. This was a delightful, amusing reference to the owner’s apparent ineptness (which is further highlighted when you assist him in dealing with thieves during the Fighers’ Guild questline).

In the updated version, the sign retains the misspelling but not the awkward correction. Now it reads ‘Lelles’ Quality Mercandise’, with no hint of an H anywhere. Unlike before, this seems to be a genuine mistake instead of a deliberate joke, suggesting someone at Bethesda may have struggled with spelling merchandise—yet NPCs will still comment on the error in their dialogue.

In essence, it’s a small detail, but it underscores one potential risk when outsourcing work, much like a texture artist at Virtuos might not fully grasp the importance of what they were working on, similar to the Dark Brotherhood’s front door. On the other hand, it’s possible that even Bethesda’s own team could have missed something similar if they had handled the remaster in-house.

Hopefully, among several problems, Oblivion Remastered will receive a fix soon when a patch is released, addressing issues like Savlian Matius’ obstinacy in letting you enter Castle Kvatch and fixing the arch-mage robes for your character to ensure their backside doesn’t keep passing through. Quite embarrassing, indeed.
