We suspected the show might be renewed for a second season, but we were still surprised and thrilled when we officially got the news.

The first season of the AppleTV+ series, adapted from Laura Dave’s novel, concluded with Hannah learning that Owen had been living under an assumed name. Years earlier, he’d testified against dangerous criminals and went into hiding to keep Hannah and their daughter, Bailey, safe from revenge. Hannah finds him, and they share a short reunion, but they both understand being together would put everyone in danger.

Owen remains hidden, but Hannah and Bailey decide to build a life together as a family. The season concludes—and what many believed was the end of the show—with a mix of sadness and optimism.

Before the second season of the show premiered, Ash Crossan from ScreenRant interviewed Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Sam Heughan to discuss how they learned they would be back to continue their roles.

I didn’t receive any initial calls about the project, just vague hints that something might happen. Then I was told I’d be meeting with Josh Singer, one of the executive producers—and also the husband of the book’s author, Laura Dave. During that meeting, Josh shared the basic idea they had.

What I initially understood about the plan turned out to be pretty different from how things actually unfolded.

Although they don’t recall all the specifics, both agreed that reading the script for season 2 immediately felt correct, as they told Screen Rant.

I mainly remember the script and what we ended up filming. When I read it, it just felt right. I also sensed that Laura [Dave] felt there was more to the story, which was great. She told me she’d only add more if she genuinely felt it was needed, and I think there was. It was good that she felt that way.

ScreenRant asked, “What’s the most important thing for viewers to keep in mind as season two begins?”

From my understanding, the core of this whole situation is a deal Hannah made. She basically said she and Bailey would stay away from Owen if they could be guaranteed safety. So, the agreement is that Owen needs to leave them alone and not reach out – that’s the really important piece of information here, and it’s something everyone needs to understand.

Look, it all really hinges on Nicholas being able to get to Bailey. He’s absolutely central to everything that’s happening – honestly, the whole plot revolves around him. He’s the key, plain and simple.

ScreenRant expressed excitement about the idea of a spy-themed scenario, suggesting things like secret identities and covert operations, but not necessarily anything scary. They asked if the people involved already had code names, or if they’d like to create some.

Rice: Do you have nicknames?

Coster-Waldau: No.

It’s funny, people often ask if they can shorten my name because they struggle with it. I get a lot of, ‘Angourie? That’s a mouthful! Can I just call you something else?’ Because of that, I’ve actually got a few nicknames, but I’m not quite ready to reveal them just yet.

I overheard people in the hallway asking how to pronounce names, and I didn’t want to seem rude by asking them how they’d heard the names mispronounced. It felt awkward to ask what strange ways people were saying them.

Coster-Waldau: Oh, there’s a lot.

Rice: I’m sure there’s a lot. Anything other than Angourie sounds crazy to me.

Coster-Waldau: The J always throws people over here, Nikolaj. I like Niko.

Rice: I like Niko. Niko!
