Following the death of her mother, Janelle, in September 2024, Nicole Kidman has expressed interest in training to be a death doula – someone who supports people nearing the end of life.
The famous actor, 58, announced the news while giving a speech at the University of San Francisco on Saturday. He was part of the school’s Silk Speaker Series, a private event.
The Academy Award-winning actress confessed it might seem strange, but she feels a strong urge to assist others in her final weeks of life.
The actress told The Daily Mail at the event that she’s hoping to grow personally and professionally by training to become a death doula.
A death doula offers emotional, spiritual, and practical support to people who are nearing the end of life and their families. They are not medical professionals, but rather provide holistic care, as defined by the International End Of Life Doula Association.
My father worked closely with people receiving palliative care, and I recently discovered the role of death doulas. It made me think about my mother’s final days – she felt very alone, and our family could only do so much to comfort her.
The actress from Moulin Rouge shared that she and her sister, both juggling busy careers and large families, realized they couldn’t give their mother the attention she needed, so they brought in a death doula to help.
The celebrity explained, “I realized how much we need people who can offer unbiased support and comfort.”
‘I feel it’s really important to have care on earth for the beginning and the end.’
The movie star also shared the advice that she has given to her children.
Nicole Kidman has four children. She shares Isabella, 33, and Connor, 31, with her former husband, Tom Cruise. She also has two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 15, with her ex-husband, Keith Urban.
The performer explained that your current choices will shape your future, but also reminded everyone that things aren’t permanent and can always change.
She explained that building emotional stability is key for them, helping them feel confident and optimistic about the future. While that future holds great potential, it can also feel daunting.
Kidman also shared what her father Antony Kidman told her before he died at age 75 in 2014.
When she asked him about the purpose of life, he replied that it was to nurture and protect children – the next generation.
The actress also remembered advice her father gave her when she was growing up. He told her, ‘You need to be resilient because you won’t always be the most intelligent person in the room, so you’ll have to rely on your resourcefulness.’
Kidman also mentioned that she’s become a stronger person because of the challenges she’s faced in life.
Everyone faces setbacks sometimes, and that’s perfectly normal. Remember, you’re in charge of your own life and happiness. Don’t worry about what others think – their opinions don’t matter. You define who you are, not anyone else.
Oh my gosh, you guys, Nicole Kidman actually said why she was at USF! It’s because her parents were professors, like, real academics! She said being at a university to talk about education is super important to her, and it just… it really touched me, honestly. It means so much to her to be supporting education because of her family. I was there, and it was amazing!
