Nicole Kidman arrives in Venice to collect prestigious Film Festival award just hours before confirming her beloved mother Janelle had sadly died
As a seasoned actress with a career spanning several decades, I can empathize with Nicole Kidman’s apprehension about the big screen premiere of her latest film at the Venice Film Festival next month. With a resume that includes some rather exposing roles, this film seems to be pushing the envelope even further for her.
On a Saturday, Nicole Kidman was spotted making her arrival in Venice, where she would later receive her esteemed Film Festival accolade. Tragically, mere hours earlier, she confirmed the passing of her cherished mother, Janelle.
On that particular evening, the actress, aged 57, was honored with the title of Best Actress for her performance in “Babygirl.” Regrettably, she couldn’t attend the ceremony following a tragic family loss.
Instead, her director, Halina Reijn, shared a statement on behalf of the actress, informing us that Nicole’s mother, Janelle, passed away at the age of 83 during her stay in Venice.
And just hours before the announcement of her mother’s death she arrived in Venice looking in good spirits.
She donned a sleek, light gray business suit, paired it with a crisp, clean white t-shirt, accessorized with a hat and sunglasses of a dark hue.
In the movie “Babygirl,” Nicole takes on the role of a dynamic New York businesswoman who embarks on a daring romantic entanglement with her significantly younger intern, portrayed by Harris Dickinson.
At the event, it was announced that I had recently arrived in Venice, only to learn moments later that my stunningly courageous mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had sadly passed away.
I’m utterly astonished and must hurry to my loved ones, yet this accolade truly belongs to her. She molded me, directed me, and fashioned me into who I am today.
I’m deeply appreciative for the opportunity to mention her name to everyone here, thanks to Halina. The blend of life and creativity she embodied is painfully poignant, and it truly saddens me. My heart aches.
‘We love you all.’
During a conversation on the Fresh Air podcast in January 2022, Nicole touched upon some challenges her mom was facing with her health.
She said they’d managed to visit the Art Gallery of New South Wales after-hours, where they took in the Matisse: Life & Spirit exhibition, describing it as ‘soothing balm’.
She mentioned that our main reason for being here is to look after her, our grandmother, and also to be with her as her grandchildren,” she explained.
‘So luckily yesterday, even though Omicron is raging through this country, we were able to take her into the gallery after hours and show her the Matisse exhibit, which coming from a mother who’s raised me in the arts, it was soothing balm. Matisse was soothing balm last night.’
Later in the interview, Nicole expressed gratitude for having the opportunity to view the world from her mother’s perspective, calling it incredibly advantageous.
She explained that, since our relationship is so intimate, she’s allowing me to see the world as if I were an 81-year-old woman, giving me this unique perspective.
Currently, it’s incredibly advantageous due to her remarkable awareness. She possesses all cognitive abilities, indicating nothing has been lost. This includes her memory, which remains intact, making it truly captivating. Moreover, she’s exceptionally intelligent.
Through her straightforward and truthful nature, she is granting me access. This means I get to see the world as she does, specifically from the perspective of my mother’s eyes, making it feel like a piece of me, even at 80 years old, is still connected with her.
She added: ‘It’s her perspective, obviously. There’s many different 80-year-old perspectives, but it’s her perspective, and her particular path, but I’m drinking it in and learning.’
At the Venice Film Festival, Nicole openly acknowledged that she found it exposing to shoot numerous scenes involving self-stimulation and portraying a dominant/submissive dynamic for the provocative new suspense movie.
Emerging talent Harris Dickinson delivers a breakout role as Samuel, the intern who perceives that his superior, Kidman (CEO of a tech company), harbors a desire to be submissive.
Nicole hasn’t created anything similar to her dreamy erotic thriller, “Eyes Wide Shut” with Tom Cruise, who was her husband at that time, for the past 25 years.
She mentioned that having an intimacy coordinator and working on a closed set was essential in creating the sex scenes that depict her character’s existential crisis, which ultimately finds resolution through a daring sexual journey that challenges societal norms.
The actress stated that the movie clearly explores themes of sexuality, but delves deeper into desires, personal reflections, hidden matters, marital relationships, truthfulness, authority, and consent.
‘This is one woman’s story and this is I hope a very liberating story. It’s told by a woman through her gaze. It’s Halina (Reijn’s) script, she wrote it and she directs and that made it unique, that suddenly I was going to be in the hands of a woman with this material. It was very dear to our shared instincts and very, very freeing.’
As a lifestyle expert, I find that Romy’s character presents unique aspects that invite individual interpretation. Each person must decide how they respond to her actions. Judgment isn’t necessarily implied in this exploration of her personality.
‘I’m drawn to studying humanity on-screen, particularly focusing on the female perspective, as I aim to delve into the complexities and intricacies of what it means to be human.’
She expressed that she felt: “naked, exposed, and scared about sharing it with others,” yet creating it was a: “tender, personal, and profoundly intense” experience for her.
She stated: ‘I had no fear she would take advantage of me. Regardless of how others might understand it, I didn’t feel mistreated. Instead, I felt included in the entire experience. There was an incredible level of nurturing among us all, and we were all extremely considerate towards each other, offering assistance whenever needed. It seemed genuine, secure, and at the same time, genuine.’
The movie starts by portraying Romy Mathis, played by Nicole Kidman, seemingly experiencing an intense climax during intimate moments with her on-screen spouse, portrayed by Antonio Banderas. Shortly after, we find Romy retreating to another space where she indulges in self-pleasure using explicit material.
In a departure from traditional erotic dramas like Basic Instinct, she delves into her inclination towards submission with her intern. Contrary to typical portrayals, her feminine desires do not lead to career ruin or family turmoil. Instead, she maintains her professional influence and marital status at the story’s end.
Director Reijn expressed the idea that each individual carries multiple aspects within them, and there exists a primal side in all of us. As for women, there is still limited room for delving into such animalistic behavior, according to her perspective.
Instead of saying, “She stated that she doesn’t believe in good and evil but rather sees both as existing,” you could paraphrase it as, “She explained that she doesn’t take sides between good and evil; instead, she acknowledges the presence of both.
He added: ‘I think there is a confusion about how to conduct yourself and how to conduct yourself within sex. Halina was always ready to dissect and challenge that and to challenge the nuance of that behaviour that opened up a whole new world for me.’
In addition to its steamy content, the film features particularly private moments, such as a scene where Nicole’s character is shown self-pleasuring following an intimate encounter with her on-screen husband, portrayed by Antonio Banderas.
Speaking candidly about intimate moments, Nicole, fresh from her role in a generational love story titled “A Family Affair”, confessed that this was the most vulnerable and exposed she’s ever been while working on set.
As I ponder the upcoming Venice Film Festival, I must admit there’s a bit of trepidation within me. I’m not entirely certain if I have the courage needed to witness the film’s grand debut on the silver screen next month.
Nicole expressed to the media outlet, “A part of me is thinking, ‘This is meant for the silver screen and an audience. I’m not entirely certain about my courage in this situation.’
She mentioned that she has worked on several films with a revealing nature, but nothing quite compares to this challenging encounter.
Nicole expressed her concern about viewers witnessing the intimate scenes, confessing that the ‘exposed’ filming experience left her feeling frayed.
