Nicolas Cage Shares Unfortunate Update on Face/Off 2

It looks like the long-awaited sequel is no longer happening. Following the departure of the director, Nicolas Cage, the original star, has confirmed the project has been cancelled.

In 2019, Paramount Pictures announced they were working on a new Face/Off movie. By 2021, Adam Wingard, known for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, was set to direct, having co-written the script with Simon Barrett. Wingard later suggested the film would be a direct sequel to the 1997 original. However, reports surfaced in 2025 that Wingard had left the project, and Nicolas Cage has since stated he hasn’t received any updates about Face/Off 2 since then.

Face/Off 2 Went Dark After Adam Wingard’s Exit

I recently had a fantastic lunch with Adam at the Smoke House in Burbank, and we really clicked. We have a lot in common, especially a shared love for the Godzilla films. We spent a good chunk of time talking about Hedorah, one of our favorite villains from those classic movies. I definitely think we’ll work together again someday, but honestly, I’m completely in the dark about any current plans. I’m the last person who’d hear about anything happening, believe me.

So far, there’s no news about a new director taking over from Wingard. It’s also uncertain whether Paramount still intends to make the movie, or if they’ve cancelled it altogether. The film – a potential follow-up to Face/Off – might be reworked, possibly as a completely new story instead of a sequel. Given that Nicolas Cage was expected to return, it seems unlikely the project is still moving forward if he hasn’t been contacted.

Fans Can Always Watch the Original

Ultimately, the original performance remains foundational. Nicolas Cage also complimented John Travolta’s work, noting how he enhanced the character of Castor Troy. As audiences may recall, Cage established the role early in the film before the iconic face-swap with Travolta’s character, Sean Archer.

Nicolas Cage praised his co-star in a recent interview with Variety, saying, ‘He was fantastic in the film. I only play my part for the first twelve minutes, but he truly took the character and ran with it, exceeding all expectations. You can tell he really enjoyed himself. I believe I helped free him creatively – I established a foundation, and he built upon it with his own unique take.’

In John Woo’s action film, Face/Off, FBI agent Sean Archer and terrorist Castor Troy undergo a radical procedure to switch faces. However, the plan backfires when Castor kills those involved in the operation and assumes Sean’s identity, leaving the real Sean imprisoned. The movie was a huge box office success, earning over $245 million globally, and has become a beloved classic of the action genre.

Cage can currently be seen in Spider-Noir, .
