Nick Jonas got emotional while opening up about daughter Malti Marie’s premature birth.
The singer, age 33, and his wife, Priyanka Chopra, 43, had a child in 2022 through surrogacy. The baby arrived three months earlier than expected.
The musician revealed on Jay Shetty’s ‘On Purpose’ podcast that her birth involved difficult and private circumstances she hadn’t previously discussed.
They got a phone call saying their baby, Malti, was coming early, so they quickly went to the hospital.
She was born weighing just one pound, eleven ounces and was a very dark purple color. The nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit quickly helped bring her back to health, as Jonas recalled with emotion.
Because of COVID-19 restrictions, Malti’s parents had to visit her in the NICU separately, each taking 12-hour shifts.
This went on for three and a half months.
Being there day after day was a really strange experience. It was comforting to see other families facing the same challenges we were, but also incredibly frightening, knowing we were all going through something so difficult together. It really struck me how common these struggles were, even though you never want to see anyone else suffer.
He shared that his daughter, their only child, bravely battled for three and a half months, and gradually began to gain weight.
The singer shared that his daughter, Malti, needed six blood transfusions while she was in the NICU, but thankfully, she was eventually able to come home with him and his wife.
He was also deeply impressed by his daughter, saying it felt like she had an innate understanding of her own birth and early life. He described each day with her as a precious gift, evident in her joyful and enthusiastic personality.
‘Spiritually, I believe that there’s gratitude in her,’ he explained.
Jonas and Priyanka tied the knot in December 2018.
During the interview, the performer shared the story of how he and his wife fell in love.
I first noticed Priyanka when I saw her on a billboard for Quantico on Sunset Boulevard. I immediately thought she was beautiful, looking back on it.
He reached out to her on Twitter months later, and they messaged back and forth for around a year before finally meeting for drinks.
Jonas shared that he nearly cancelled a meeting because the other person was 45 minutes late. He’s since learned this is common, so he now anticipates it. Luckily, he decided to wait, and they ended up having a really good discussion.
Honestly, I’ve followed Joe and Sophie since the beginning, and it’s SO sweet to hear how it all happened! Apparently, it wasn’t instant, but after a real date – not just hanging out – that’s when Joe knew. He actually said he felt like she was the one he was going to marry! I always knew they were perfect together, but hearing him say that? It just melts my heart!
He said he fell for her instantly. “The moment she walked in, I knew I wanted to marry her,” he explained. He added that he told her he loved her very early on, after only a couple of dates.
