Nicolas Cage’s sci-fi action masterpiece is swapping faces onto a new streaming service.
Nicolas Cage is known for his versatility as an actor. He first received praise for his performances in the 1987 films Moonstruck and Raising Arizona, and later won an Academy Award for his role in Leaving Las Vegas (1995). He earned another Academy Award nomination for playing dual roles in Adaptation (2002). From the 1990s onward, Cage became a prominent star in action films, appearing in popular movies such as The Rock (1996), Con Air (1997), Face/Off (1997), Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), the National Treasure series (2004–2007), the Ghost Rider films (2007–2011), and Kick-Ass (2010), with one of these titles soon to be available on a new streaming platform.
After nearly 30 years, the classic action movie Face/Off is now available on a streaming service. The 1997 film, directed by John Woo and written by Mike Werb and Michael Colleary, features Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in a thrilling story about an FBI agent and a terrorist who switch faces through experimental surgery.
The action classic Face/Off will be available to stream on Paramount+ starting May 1st. It’s currently on Peacock, but will be removed from that service in two days. Fans may remember it was also taken off Netflix earlier this year.
In addition to John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, the film features a strong supporting cast including Joan Allen, Dominique Swain, Alessandro Nivola, Gina Gershon, Nick Cassavetes, Harve Presnell, Colm Feore, Robert Wisdom, CCH Pounder, Margaret Cho, John Carroll Lynch, Thomas Jane, James Denton, Tommy Flanagan, Matt Ross, and Chris Bauer.
Critics loved Face/Off, giving it a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They especially praised John Travolta and Nicolas Cage for their performances, noting how cleverly they swapped roles in a thrilling, fast-paced chase. The movie is known for its visually impressive action, typical of director John Woo’s style. Audiences also enjoyed it, giving it an 82% score.
Face/Off earned $245.7 million globally, more than tripling its $80 million production cost. While it didn’t quite break into the top 10 highest-grossing films of 1997, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing. Since its release, Face/Off has become a beloved cult classic and is often considered one of director John Woo’s finest works.
Paramount Pictures first announced a remake of the film in 2019, with plans for a new cast. By 2021, Adam Wingard was set to direct, but the project evolved into a sequel called Face/Off 2, which he would co-write with Simon Barrett. However, by February 2026, Wingard had left the project, and a new director was needed for the Face/Off sequel.
