Warner Bros. is moving ahead with a Weapons follow-up after Zach Cregger’s Oscar-winning success.
According to Deadline, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. are starting to develop a prequel to Weapons that focuses on the character of Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan. Zach Shields, known for his work on the Monsterverse films, has joined the project to co-write the script alongside Cregger. The movie is currently being referred to as Gladys.
Weapons explores the unsettling disappearance of a whole class of students, except for one. Told through the eyes of different community members, the story unravels a growing supernatural horror. At the heart of it all is Gladys, played by Madigan, a menacing witch responsible for the disappearances. The film promises to reveal Gladys’s backstory, offering horror fans a deeper understanding of her terrifying character.
After winning an Academy Award for her role as Aunt Galdys, actress Madigan mentioned the possibility of making a prequel film focused on the orange-haired witch. She said it would be fantastic if they could make it happen. Madigan won Best Supporting Actress, beating out strong competition including Teyana Taylor, Wunmi Mosaku, Elle Fanning, and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas.
I’ve gotten that question a lot. Zach Cregger, who wrote and directed the project, says a sequel is possible, but things take time in this industry. Until everything is officially confirmed, it’s hard to say for sure. However, if it happens, I’d be thrilled because I have a lot of faith in Zach and his creative vision.
The Oscar win was a huge moment for the horror genre, but it was also incredibly significant for actress Maryanne Madigan. It came four decades after her previous Oscar nomination for the 1985 film Twice in a Lifetime, setting a new record for the longest time between nominations for an actress.
The movie was a huge financial success, earning over $270 million globally, and also won Madigan an award from the Screen Actors Guild for her performance as the enigmatic family member. Cregger has been busy with more than just this film; he’s also been heavily involved in a reboot of Resident Evil for Sony, which is coming out in September. Shields recently took a break from the Monsterverse to work on several TV shows and stage productions before joining the cast of Weapons.
