New Spider-Man 4 bombshell has broken the internet; fans divided
As a seasoned gamer and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) enthusiast with over two decades of comic book and movie-watching under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation regarding the upcoming Spider-Man 4. The multiversal angle is certainly intriguing, given the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but as someone who’s seen the highs and lows of the Spidey saga, I can’t help but wonder if we might be in for another epic adventure or a repetition of past misadventures.
Three distinct Spider-Man film franchises have existed so far, each unique in its own manner, yet sharing an uncommon trait – none of them has released a fourth film. This trend is about to be broken with the forthcoming fourth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man series featuring Tom Holland.
In the Spider-Man: Homecoming movie series (which included Avengers and Captain America films too), Holland played a character that will reappear for another trilogy. Sony and Marvel Studios are joining forces again for this new series, and given the immense success of the third movie in the previous trilogy, Spider-Man: No Way Home, excitement has reached its peak.
But recent news indicates that the dramatic storyline of the groundbreaking film may not have concluded permanently, leaving fans with a mix of emotions.
Spider-Man 4 will reportedly be a multiversal movie
As per well-known Marvel source Daniel Richtman, it’s likely that the upcoming Spider-Man film, referred to as Spider-Man 4, will delve into a multiverse narrative. While this concept might seem typical given the ongoing Multiverse Storyline in the MCU, it’s also intriguing for fans who may have been hoping for a slightly different direction after the last installment of the series.
In the film “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reappeared as their respective Spider-Men, merging the three Peter Parkers from distinct Spider-Man film franchises into one spectacular scene. This memorable event celebrated the idea of the Spider-Verse and significantly contributed to the Multiverse Storyline, demonstrating the boundless potential when multiple universes are at play.
The movie was revolutionary due to uniting the three actors portraying Spider-Man, and it marked a satisfying end to the Homecoming trilogy while simultaneously paving the way for another series. This trilogy was deeply tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with each film featuring a significant character acting as Peter Parker’s mentor – Tony Stark in “Homecoming”, Nick Fury, Mysterio, and Happy Hogan in “Far From Home”, Doctor Strange, and the other two Spider-Men in “No Way Home”.
Instead of following the usual pattern for Spider-Man films, it was acceptable due to their significance within the franchise. Yet, it appeared as though “No Way Home” paved the way for a more authentic comic book experience featuring Peter Parker saving New York City as his own hero. This led many to assume that “Spider-Man 4” would focus on a realistic, self-contained adventure.
Considering this perspective, there seems to be a significant split among fans regarding the concept of a multiverse-themed Spider-Man 4. This scenario could potentially deprive viewers of a straightforward, street-level, comic book-authentic narrative centered around Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Moreover, it might lead to the character being dragged back into an epic, grandiose Spiderman adventure for the third film in a row, which could feel repetitive.
Fans have rightly noted that it’s been since 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” when we last saw a more standalone Spider-Man film. Even then, the movie was deeply connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) narrative at the time. It’s hard to ignore this fact because Peter Parker has been rapidly immersed in the MCU plotline. While this isn’t necessarily a negative aspect (we’re talking about Spider-Man here), the ending of “No Way Home” has temporarily separated him from the main characters of the franchise for now. This situation presents an opportunity for a more earthbound adventure featuring Spider-Man, which is something that could be quite intriguing.
If Sony and Marvel decide to create another multiverse Spider-Man tale, it seems like they might be trying to replicate the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Though such ambition is understandable, it could potentially lessen the emotional impact of the movie’s conclusion and rush Peter Parker back into the chaos of the Multiverse storyline too quickly.
Just like any gossip, it’s wise to remain patient and observe the developments. It’s natural for fans to feel anxious about these reports.
