For a long time, enjoying the Star Wars films was straightforward. The original three movies told a complete story in order. But then George Lucas made three additional films that took place earlier in the timeline. He suggested watching these first, even though they revealed surprises from the original films.
Even before Disney bought Lucasfilm and added five more films to the series, the Star Wars saga had a long history. Now that Dave Filoni is a co-head of Lucasfilm, people are curious how he likes to experience the entire story. When asked, he gave a careful and considerate answer.
Dave Filoni Insists There’s No Wrong Way to Watch Star Wars
“You can enjoy Star Wars however you like,” says the person now in charge of bringing the franchise to new audiences. “There’s really no right or wrong way to experience it.”
When asked about it directly, Filoni explained that he doesn’t have a preference. He believes the decision of when to introduce the shows is best left to parents, and he wouldn’t make that choice for them. He currently suggests starting with just one show, and joked that he’d check with George Lucas before making a firm recommendation.
Lucas always believed the Star Wars films should be viewed in the order of events within the universe – Episodes I through VI. Dave Filoni explained that he respects Lucas’s vision and personally watches the films that way too, starting with The Phantom Menace and continuing through to The Rise of Skywalker, including the more recent sequels.
Jon Favreau Gives His Take on How to Watch Star Wars
You know, when I asked about it, Jon Favreau – the director – actually gave a really grounded answer. He wasn’t getting bogged down in trying to perfectly match the old stories or in-universe logic. Instead, he explained he wanted to reflect how filmmaking itself had actually changed since the original movies, and how George Lucas’s ideas evolved over time. It felt much more about respecting the real-world journey of the franchise, which I really appreciated.
I don’t think there’s much debate for me,” Favreau explained. “I prefer watching the Star Wars films in the order they were originally released, starting with Episode IV. That’s just how I first experienced them, and it immediately throws you into the action. It will be interesting to see how people react now. But I also think that release order helps establish the overall feel of the saga. While the story technically unfolds from episodes one through nine, the way the films were made and the storytelling style evolved over time. So, I still support that original release order.”
Based on his comments, Filoni would be fine with this too, or even .
The new Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, will be released in theaters on May 22nd. All other Star Wars movies are currently available to stream on Disney+.
