New James Bond casting is “underway” – but it shouldn’t be Callum Turner or Jacob Elordi

The official search for the next James Bond has begun, ending months of rumors about who might take on the iconic role. Amazon MGM Studios announced the news on Thursday, promising to share updates with fans when available.

This short announcement will inevitably start the guessing games all over again, and we expect to see the same actors mentioned repeatedly. Luckily, it seems we’ve moved on from considering options like Tom Hardy and Idris Elba, who were probably never a realistic fit for the role given their age. (Who could forget when a blog falsely reported Tom Hardy as the new Bond back in September 2020? That was quite a moment.)

The buzz is all about Callum Turner, who reportedly let slip to friends that he’s the next Bond, and Jacob Elordi, who seems to be the current frontrunner. While actors like Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James are still possibilities, we believe neither of them should get the part.

Look, I’m not saying we need to get rid of James Bond altogether! It’s just that this feels like a perfect chance to really shake things up and give someone totally new a shot at playing such a legendary character. Imagine how exciting that could be!

Look, I get why Amazon MGM Studios might want a really famous actor for the next James Bond – it’s a big risk, right? But honestly, I think they’re missing the point. James Bond is the star. People tune in for Bond, not whoever’s playing him at the moment. The character is what everyone knows and loves, so that’s what will bring in the viewers, not necessarily a big name attached to the role.

Sometimes, casting a famous actor can actually be a mistake. Remember the criticism Daniel Craig faced when he was first cast as James Bond because of his hair color? We’ve already seen jokes about how someone as tall as Jacob Elordi could possibly disguise himself, and whoever takes on the role of Bond will be under intense public examination.

It would be tough for a rising actor to step into such a well-known role, but at least they wouldn’t be weighed down by expectations or past portrayals. This marks a fresh, daring direction for James Bond, and some fans are already hesitant about the change in leadership with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson. So, why not give a new actor a life-changing opportunity?

This isn’t meant to criticize Callum Turner or Jacob Elordi – both are talented actors who have excelled in diverse roles. Turner recently starred in the British mystery drama Rose of Nevada, and Elordi received an Oscar nomination for his work in Frankenstein. We’re confident either actor would be fantastic as Bond, but we’d actually be disappointed if the long-term commitment of the role prevented them from pursuing other exciting opportunities.

Screenwriter Steven Knight hasn’t revealed much about his upcoming James Bond film, but many believe it will feature a younger 007 than we’re used to seeing. If that’s true, then casting an unfamiliar actor in the role would make a lot of sense.

Variety reports that Nina Gold, a highly respected casting director, is likely to be working on the next James Bond film. While neither she nor Amazon MGM Studios have officially confirmed this, many believe she’s an ideal fit, especially if the studio is looking for a new actor to take on the role of Bond.

As a huge movie and gaming fan, I was seriously impressed when I heard Gold was heading up the search for the next James Bond. The woman cast Game of Thrones and the Star Wars sequels! She’s the one who discovered and helped launch the careers of actors like Emilia Clarke, John Boyega, and Daisy Ridley – basically, she’s a master at finding amazing talent. If anyone can find the perfect person to fill those iconic 007 shoes, it’s her.

Given how important this is, Amazon MGM Studios will likely be very careful with its decisions – getting the next Bond wrong would be a huge mistake. However, if they’re going to make significant changes to the James Bond franchise, now is the perfect time.
