Fans are getting a sneak peek at the new Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, with the first look at Maya Hawke and Kieran Culkin as they join the cast. The clip introduces the actors in their roles from the original story.
Lionsgate released a short video on their YouTube channel yesterday, offering a look back at the world of The Hunger Games and teasing what fans can anticipate in the new movie.
The new movie, directed by Francis Lawrence and coming out on November 20th, tells the story of a young Haymitch Abernathy (played by Joseph Zada) being selected as District 12’s tribute for the 50th Hunger Games.

Zada is stepping into a role previously played by Woody Harrelson, and she’s not the only new face taking on a familiar character. Ethan Hawke and Macaulay Culkin will now play Wiress and Caesar Flickerman, roles that were formerly brought to life by Amanda Plummer and Stanley Tucci.
The latest preview shows Ethan Hawke playing Wiress, a tribute from District 3 and a past Hunger Games winner. Macaulay Culkin appears as the lively television host broadcasting the games.
What to Read Next
This movie continues the story begun in 2023’s The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes while also showing what happened before the events of the original Hunger Games from 2012. It includes younger versions of familiar characters like Effie Trinket and Plutarch Heavensbee.
As hinted at before, Elle Fanning and Jesse Plemons will be the new leads, replacing Elizabeth Banks and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Ralph Fiennes is now the third actor to portray President Coriolanus Snow, following Donald Sutherland and Tom Blyth.

The movie Sunrise on the Reaping is adapted from Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel of the same name. The cast also includes Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Ben Wang, Laura Marcus, Glenn Close, Billy Porter, and Iris Apatow.
Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are returning as Katniss and Peeta, the characters they famously played in the first Hunger Games movies. Their roles will be part of a story-within-a-story setup.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is released in cinemas on 20 November.
