New cities, same dreams: Alicia Keys brings ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ to Los Angeles

Bringing a piece of New York to Los Angeles doesn’t intimidate Alicia Keys.

I’ve been following Alicia Keys’ career for a while now, and I was so inspired by how much passion she put into creating “Hell’s Kitchen.” It’s a musical based on her life growing up in Manhattan, and you can really feel that connection when you see it. It was amazing when it opened on Broadway in 2024 and even got 13 Tony nominations, including Best Musical! I’m so excited it’s coming to the Hollywood Pantages Theatre this Wednesday. It feels like a really natural next step for the show, and a testament to how well it’s been received.

Keys explained that the project took 13 years to create, and she expressed strong personal commitment to it. She fully supports and believes in the work.

Los Angeles is one of the stops on the musical’s 45-city tour across North America. The show, with a story by Kristoffer Diaz and direction by Michael Greif, includes many of Alicia Keys’ biggest hits, as well as new music and lyrics written by Keys and others specifically for the production. Adding to the excitement, tennis superstar and businesswoman Serena Williams joined the team as a producer, which Keys described as incredibly inspiring.

Alicia Keys shared that a friend saw an early performance and was deeply moved. Keys recalled her friend saying something along the lines of, ‘You made that young man cry!’ She was incredibly touched by the show and felt a strong connection to it. Keys also noted that her friend is a brilliant businesswoman and a forward-thinker, and everything about the experience felt perfect.

Sports

As a huge tennis fan, I was surprised to hear some chatter about Serena Williams potentially coming back! But she herself just said she has no plans to return to playing. This came after reports surfaced that she’d rejoined the drug-testing program for athletes, which definitely got people talking, but she’s made it clear she’s still retired.

The musical, drawing from Alicia Keys’ experiences growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, tells the story of 17-year-old Ali as she seeks freedom, love, and a way to express herself in 1990s New York City. While dealing with a protective mother named Jersey, Ali finds comfort and learns piano from Miss Liza Jane, an older resident in her family’s affordable housing complex.

Okay, so this musical centers around Ali, a young woman finding her way – and falling for an older guy named Knuck. But honestly, the heart of the story isn’t the romance; it’s the relationships between the women. What really struck me was the complex connection between Ali, her mother, and this fascinating character, Miss Liza Jane. The writer, Keys, is clearly hoping this dynamic will give the musical a universal appeal, making it more than just a story tied to a specific city.

I thought it was really cool how even though the story is set in New York City, it feels like it could happen anywhere. That’s what makes it so relatable! You don’t have to be from New York to connect with it, which is probably why the tour worked so well. Ultimately, it’s just a beautiful story about the love between a mother and her daughter, and that’s something everyone can understand.

As a huge musical fan, I really appreciate how “Hell’s Kitchen” feels so authentically New York. It’s not just set there – the story actually deals with things New Yorkers experience, like the debate around Rudy Giuliani’s stop-and-frisk policies. And the character of Knuck? He’s part of a real New York scene, one of those amazing bucket drumming groups you see on the sidewalks. The creator, Keys, really wanted to make sure that New York’s energy and spirit were woven into every part of the show, and I think he absolutely nailed it.

Alicia Keys wants the audience to truly experience the vibrant and energetic atmosphere of New York City. She aims to capture a sense of grit and authenticity, suggesting the show, while set in the 1990s, feels timeless and relevant to any era.

Entertainment & Arts

Alicia Keys’ new musical, ‘Hell’s Kitchen,’ which draws inspiration from her life story, recently premiered. The show, with a script by Kristoffer Diaz, features stunning vocal performances of reimagined versions of Keys’ most popular songs.

Alicia Keys compares Los Angeles to New York, describing both cities as hubs for creative people. She’s excited to see how the Hollywood audience reacts to her show.

Keys expressed her enthusiasm about sharing this project with the Los Angeles community, especially its many creative and ambitious individuals. She hopes it will inspire them and offer a local connection to the magic of Broadway.

The show will travel with a cast featuring both up-and-coming performers and experienced veterans. Maya Drake is making her touring debut as Ali, while Kennedy Caughell, who previously starred in “Jersey Boys,” has toured nationally in shows like “Wicked” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” Keys is especially excited to see fresh faces bring her characters to life.

Keys described the performers as incredibly talented young people who are living their dreams. She said their dancing was exceptional and their singing was powerful enough to shake the building. Seeing these up-and-coming artists thrive was, in her words, magnificent.

I’m so fascinated by how the role of Ali really comes to life through the actress playing her – Alicia Keys has said it’s all about the performer’s interpretation. It’s amazing to think that Maleah Joi Moon, who originated the role on Broadway, won a Tony at just 21! And now, seeing Drake take on the part is incredible. She’s only 19, and this is her first big tour, but Keys calls her a total pro – a ‘pure champion veteran,’ which is such a lovely compliment!

Keys noted it’s unusual to see a young woman in charge of something so large and significant. She described the role as demanding and substantial, full of challenging material.

Music

Alicia Keys and Grandmaster Flash are two of the initial artists who will receive the ICE Medal of Honor from the Black American Music Association.

When questioned about potential future projects for “Hell’s Kitchen,” like a movie, Keys chuckled and admitted she couldn’t reveal many details, but confirmed they are considering a lot of different options.

Alicia Keys’ new documentary, “Alicia Keys: Girl From Hell’s Kitchen,” will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in June. The film tells the story of her upbringing in Hell’s Kitchen and how growing up there shaped her into the artist she is today.

Keys explained that the work offers a glimpse into the true character of Hell’s Kitchen and reveals the real-life people and vibrant atmosphere that fueled the story’s focus on pursuing dreams.

Okay, so “Hell’s Kitchen” on Broadway sadly closed its doors in February after a good run of 767 shows, but honestly, for Alicia Keys, it feels like this is where the real journey starts. It’s not an ending for her, but a fresh beginning!

The show is a real emotional journey – you’ll feel everything from joy and triumph to sadness, and it might even make you think of loved ones. It’s a rollercoaster of feelings, and I’m thrilled for audiences to experience it all. This has been an incredible experience for me, and I’m passionate about continuing this work.
