Neural Simulation Spotlight: Will – Flameblade

Neural Simulation Spotlight: Will – Flameblade

As a seasoned veteran of countless battles and duels, I must say that the strategy against this formidable Boss is one for the books. With a staggering HP of 1,156,208, it’s crucial to strike fast and hard to prevent Will from summoning an army of pesky mooks.

In simpler terms, Flameblade is a fiery version of the character Will Anderson, specifically designed by Neural Sim. Although he possesses some unique attacks, he predominantly relies on his henchmen to carry out most of the tasks.

Attacks and Behaviour

General Info

He frequently moves about the battlefield, only stopping when confined to a specific spot, which also grants him short durations of indestructibility. Additionally, during combat, an armor known as “frequency assimilation armor” will appear on his left shoulder.

Neural Simulation Spotlight: Will – Flameblade

Approximately 15-20 seconds following the start of a battle, this event occurs. It involves a reaction with one of his moves, creating an opportunity for you to miss attacks. However, beyond providing this chance, it does not appear to have significant effects.

Gun Burst

As a gamer, I unleash a few shots from my weapon initially, but it’s that final, powerful charged shot I save for when the moment is right. Getting hit by this charge sends me reeling and sets me ablaze with a Damage Over Time effect on harder settings. The regular shots are nothing compared to the charged one, which is relatively easy to dodge as long as I keep my agility up and stay on the move.

Melee Strike

When confronted with “slash blasts” (essentially his series of rapid strikes), you may get temporarily knocked back or, at higher difficulty settings, suffer from a persistent damage over time effect. Interestingly, Will can move towards you to initiate the attack, but once he begins, he’s stuck in the animation, allowing you to dodge out of range and largely avoid subsequent attacks. However, when his armor is active, he performs a more extensive combo. Given the ease of dodging this attack and the fact that he gets locked into the animation afterwards, this situation might even be beneficial.

Goon Squad

No, not that kind of goon.

He calls upon two of his Checker Squad comrades to handle the tough tasks for him. The enemies summoned appear in two distinct forms. Though they have specific names within the game, I don’t feel like searching through menus to find that out right now, and it doesn’t matter much anyways, so I’ve started referring to them as Shooter and Slicer.

As I level up and face tougher challenges, I typically shout out twice after each summon spell I cast. And here’s the twist: on harder levels, my teleport ability also triggers a sidekick to join the fray.

In the heat of the game, you’ll realize it on your own, but what Will prefers over engaging in a fight with you is his favorite activity. Quite the laid-back individual, isn’t he?

Shooty

These individuals launch assaults aimed at the ground, which momentarily stun upon impact and create an area that deals damage over time if you’re within it. Be mindful of their targeted locations to take appropriate evasive measures.

Slicey

Sliceys exhibit remarkable mobility, swiftly appearing near you before launching one of two distinct assaults.

  • A ground pound-style attack with an area of effect indicator
  • A horizontal slash with both of its arms, having a much smaller range than the first attack

In both instances, these attacks momentarily stumble upon impact. Luckily for you, it appears that following their teleportation, they become somewhat disoriented, providing you with an opportunity to swiftly avoid being hit by either of their subsequent attacks.

HP Triggers

As a die-hard fan, I can tell you that Will possesses three Harry Potter (HP) activation points, each one being a soft trigger. Each of these triggers centers around the summoning of Checker Squad members, with him summoning more of them as the challenge level escalates.

80% HP

Calls forth a line of Shooties who unleash ground-focused assaults in a progressively tightening square formation across the battlefield. Following this volley, they vanish, allowing the battle to carry on.

50% HP

In two successive rounds, a group of common enemies (mooks) will be called forth by him. The battle cannot progress until these groups are defeated completely. During this time, he is immune to damage. After defeating each group, he will drop U-Energy refills that can be collected.

20% HP

Calls forth a horde of Sliceys that charge at you for an assault, then vanish to reengage the battle.

Strategy

Neural Simulation Spotlight: Will – Flameblade

Will specializes in getting as many things on the field as fast as possible. If left unchecked, it can very quickly become quite overwhelming. The solution: just kill him faster. The faster you can push Will to his HP triggers, the less time he has to vomit out mooks to clutter up the arena and generally be annoying.

One potential strategy when dealing with Will is taking advantage of his squishy nature and frequent invulnerability phases for downtime. During these periods, it becomes possible to prepare a powerful damage sequence from an alternate DPS character such as Cherno – Enigma or Siris – Ksana. This can be effective even against his 60% Thermal resistance, given his overpowered status. The burst damage can then be unleashed immediately following the resolution of his second HP trigger (which also coincidentally drops U-Energy pickups). This could potentially one-shot him, bypassing the third trigger altogether. The timing depends on your ability to generate a sufficient amount of burst damage, so don’t hesitate to experiment and find the optimal moment.

Team Building

For a character to be suitable as Will’s primary damage dealer, they should possess a rapid-fire ability to swiftly activate HP thresholds and robust crowd control capabilities to efficiently clear groups of enemies during the second HP threshold. Consequently, we are considering two standout DPS options that meet these requirements.

Lyfe – Infinite Sight

Lyfe’s primary ability is crucial for handling the swift mook spawns triggered by the second trigger. However, this skill comes at a base cost of 60 U-Energy, which might be too time-consuming to gather. Fortunately, there’s a clever workaround to avoid accumulating that much energy.

During the initial activation of the HP ability, any Shootys generated can serve as targets for your regular ability to activate the neuronic effect that lowers the cost of your ultimate. This decrease in cost will make your ultimate more readily available to eliminate the minions spawned by his second HP trigger. Aiming correctly might require some practice, and you may need to adjust your regular skill cast to mark enough enemies effectively.

Instead of using the best approach, I could also tag the initial batch of enemies that appear on the screen for the same outcome. (As a gamer)

Katya – Dawnwing

Although Katya doesn’t appear to have a distinct advantage over Will, she seems exceptionally suited for their confrontations. Her basic skill can swiftly eliminate minions spawned by Will’s 50% HP trigger faster than Lyfe does, and her ultimate ability offers enough power to bypass triggers independently. However, it’s essential to be aware that Katya’s ultimate damage is delivered in two phases: an initial strike from the ult, followed by a stronger burst from active crystals firing. The second hit is typically larger, so ensure that the first one doesn’t exceed the HP trigger threshold, or else Will will enter invulnerability, rendering the subsequent and more damaging hit useless.

Supports

In this scenario, inflicting greater harm seems to be the primary strategy, given Will’s vulnerability and three HP thresholds that keep him immobilized for much of the battle. This limits the effectiveness of CC ( Crowd Control) skills like Mauxir – Shadow Ka, as her supportive ability barely activates due to Will’s HP triggers. Instead, damage amplifiers such as Acacia – Kaguya become more useful in this context. However, if you find yourself having trouble with this fight, a healer might be a beneficial addition to your team.
