Spy thrillers often feel the need to be huge and explosive, but that’s not what really makes the genre great. While big action sequences can be exciting, they aren’t the most important part of a good spy story.
The German series Unfamiliar, created by Paul Coates, offers a different take on spy thrillers. Instead of focusing on large-scale events, it centers on the relationship between two former spies and how their past is now affecting them. If the show does well, it could prove that audiences are interested in spy stories built around characters and their connections, rather than just global conflicts.
Netflix’s Unfamiliar Stays Grounded Instead of Raising the Stakes Too High
Spy stories often involve saving the world, but real espionage is usually more subtle. A spy’s main goal is to complete a mission without drawing attention, yet many thrillers focus on large, visible operations that make spies stand out, even if they ultimately succeed.
Even though Unfamiliar requires viewers to accept some unbelievable situations, the first season presents compelling personal stakes for its characters. The show centers on Simon (Felix Kramer) and Meret (Susanne Wolff), a married couple who used to be spies. They now operate a safe house, but their past catches up with them when old adversaries reappear and begin to hunt them down.
Simon and Meret are already struggling to save their marriage, and being chased by old enemies definitely isn’t helping. It’s a bit like other relationship dramas, but with much more danger. This creates a tightly focused story that feels realistic and centers on the characters’ connection with each other, offering a more personal experience than many of the fast-paced, action-heavy spy shows out there.
The show isn’t without action, but it doesn’t rely on big, dramatic sequences. Instead, it centers on Simon, Meret, and the people around them as they get caught up in the unfolding events.
Unfamiliar Season 2 Would Give Unfamiliar a Chance to Improve
Currently, it’s unknown whether Unfamiliar will return for a second season. Without a chance to finish the storyline, it’s unclear if the show will be renewed or if it will join the numerous series that end with unresolved cliffhangers.
If the show Unfamiliar gets another season, it needs to resolve some issues to keep people watching. The first six episodes have several plot holes, and while some are expected, too many can leave viewers confused and make them lose interest.
The show’s pacing feels uneven. While many series struggle with this, it’s noticeable here – some parts drag on too long, feeling like filler, while others feel rushed. Despite being a good espionage thriller, addressing these issues could make Unfamiliar even better if it gets another season.
