Netflix’s sci-fi series, The OA, is known for being thought-provoking, but its ending left many viewers frustrated. While Netflix has produced hugely popular shows like Squid Game, Bridgerton, and You, becoming major cultural hits, the platform hasn’t quite established itself as a leader in science fiction programming.
Netflix took a big risk in 2016 with the sci-fi series The OA. While it showed promise for the platform’s science fiction content, fans were upset when the show was abruptly canceled after just two seasons. Even now, a decade later, the cancellation feels like a loss, especially since The OA hadn’t fully realized its potential.
The OA Is One Of Netflix’s Best Sci-Fi Series
Shows like Stranger Things, Black Mirror, and 3 Body Problem demonstrate Netflix’s ability to create memorable science fiction series. While those shows were huge successes, one of Netflix’s strongest sci-fi offerings hasn’t yet reached the same level of popularity.
The beginning of The OA seems straightforward enough. The series starts with a woman who disappeared years earlier returning home with her sight restored. But quickly, the show unfolds into a complex and surprising story full of unexpected twists. Right from the start, The OA demonstrates its willingness to take chances with its characters, ideas, and overall plot.
While often described as science fiction, The OA explores much deeper themes. The show uses characters’ near-death experiences to ask big questions about life, death, the possibility of alternate realities, and our purpose in the universe. By mixing science fiction with spiritual and philosophical ideas, particularly Gnosticism, The OA creates a complex and layered viewing experience.
The OA Season 2 Ended On A Cliffhanger
The second season of The OA concludes with a surprising twist: Prairie and the other characters suddenly become aware they’re on a movie set. This suggests their story might be happening in our world, but the show doesn’t explain what’s really going on, leaving the mystery unresolved.
The Netflix series deliberately leaves some questions unanswered, skillfully maintaining an air of mystery and encouraging viewers to question what they’re seeing. While the second season ends with intriguing clues, The OA avoids providing simple explanations, leaving room for interpretation and continued discussion.
The final episode of the sci-fi series ended on a cliffhanger, suggesting it was intended to continue for another season – it wouldn’t make sense to leave such a major plot point unresolved. However, Netflix unexpectedly canceled the show, disappointing fans and the cast. Reports indicate that The OA was a costly production, which is common for science fiction shows on television. Despite its devoted following, the show wasn’t attracting enough viewers to justify the high production costs (via BBC).
Watching The OA Is A Bittersweet Experience
I was completely hooked by The OA. No matter how many fan theories I read, it was genuinely impossible to guess what would happen next to Prairie and the others. It’s such an amazing show to watch, but it’s also bittersweet knowing we’ll never get the full story. It leaves you wanting so much more!
While some viewers might be frustrated that the series leaves questions unanswered, The OA is still a worthwhile watch because of its incredibly original idea. It’s hard to find other TV shows that are as thought-provoking, unique, and emotionally resonant. Even though Netflix canceled The OA ten years ago, fans are still hoping for its return.
