Netflix’s The Imperfects: A Dark Superhero Show Cancelled Too Soon

Netflix offers a strong selection of superhero shows, and one recent 10-episode series successfully combines the styles of The Boys and The Umbrella Academy. Netflix has built a reputation for creating high-quality, diverse TV shows, earning a place among the all-time greats. However, the platform is also known for unexpectedly ending popular series.

Netflix has a history of canceling shows, sometimes after only one season. While some cancellations were likely due to low ratings or high production expenses, others felt premature. For example, Warrior Nun and The Imperfects both gained a dedicated following but were canceled quickly. The Imperfects, created by Shelley Eriksen and Dennis Heston, premiered on Netflix in November 2022 before its unexpected cancellation.

Netflix released all ten episodes of The Imperfects at the same time, making it perfect for binge-watching. Unfortunately, it didn’t attract enough viewers to cover its costs, so the show was canceled. This left the story unfinished and on a cliffhanger. Despite this disappointing end, The Imperfects stands out as one of Netflix’s strongest superhero series and helped launch the career of a rising star.

The Imperfects Is One Of The Most Original Superhero Shows Of The Decade

The show The Imperfects centers around Tilda, a punk rock singer, Juan, a comic book artist, and Abbi, a genetics student. Despite their very different lives and personalities, they share a surprising connection: they all developed monstrous abilities after undergoing an experimental gene therapy treatment performed by Dr. Alex Sarkov.

Tilda, Juan, and Abbi are supernatural creatures – a banshee, a chupacabras, and a succubus, respectively – who join forces to track down Sarkov. They want him to change them back into humans, but the task proves much harder than they expected. Along the way, they face numerous obstacles that challenge their abilities, and they find help from Dr. Sydney Burke (Italia Ricci), who used to work with Sarkov.

I’m totally hooked on The Imperfects! It’s such a great show – it mixes fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and action with everything you love about superhero stories. It reminds me a lot of The Boys with its intense action and the way it shows the darker side of having superpowers. It really dives into the struggles these characters face and the messy consequences of their powers – it’s not your typical superhero story!

Like many recent dark superhero shows such as The Umbrella Academy and The Boys, The Imperfects features characters who gain powers from a mysterious and dangerous source. However, The Imperfects differentiates itself by incorporating horror elements and focusing on mythical creatures – including a chupacabras, banshee, and succubus – setting it apart from other shows in the genre.

The Imperfects Was Iñaki Godoy’s Breakout Role Before One Piece

Despite being canceled after just one season, the show The Imperfects had a significant impact. It launched the career of Iñaki Godoy, who went on to become a major Netflix star playing Monkey D. Luffy in the live-action One Piece series.

Godoy’s career gained international traction with The Imperfects, his first English-language project. A year later, he landed the role of Luffy in One Piece, which rapidly became one of Netflix’s most successful shows of the 2020s. Currently, One Piece is gearing up for its third season, The Battle of Alabasta, expected to premiere in 2027.

Despite being canceled after one season like many other Netflix shows, The Imperfects actually played a crucial role in the success of One Piece. It’s believed that One Piece wouldn’t have found its ideal main actor without the groundwork laid by The Imperfects. For fans of superhero series, The Imperfects offers a unique take on the genre, and its short run makes it perfect for watching all at once.
