Even though the Duffer Brothers recently wrapped up Stranger Things, they’re already working on new shows for Netflix. They’re now helping other filmmakers develop their ideas, and their recent horror series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, received positive reviews. Their next project, The Boroughs, just released a first look trailer online.
The new series, The Boroughs, immediately brings to mind the Duffer Brothers, who are executive producers. Set in a New Mexico retirement community, the show centers around a group of outsiders facing a strange and powerful presence. Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the creators of Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, are running the series, which blends supernatural and science fiction elements. They recently spoke with Tudum about their collaboration with the Duffers and shared details about the project.
Right from the start, we had a very specific vision for The Boroughs: we wanted it to be genuinely creepy, intriguing, thrilling, and also really moving. The biggest hurdle was building a world that could support all those feelings at the same time. That’s why collaborating with the Duffer Brothers was such a blast – they’re absolute pros at blending heartfelt moments with genuine scares. They just get how to do that perfectly.
With a stellar cast including Alfred Molina (known from Spider-Man: No Way Home), Geena Davis (Thelma & Louise), Alfre Woodard (Clemency), Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Bill Pullman (Independence Day), and many other talented actors, The Boroughs boasts the star power to match its compelling story. The initial trailer hints at the same captivating mystery and sense of wonder that made the first season of Stranger Things so popular. This is exactly why the Duffer Brothers were so confident in Addiss and Matthews as showrunners and in assembling such a high-profile cast, as they recently shared with Tudum.
This story beautifully blends emotional depth with thrilling scares. We’re excited for audiences everywhere to uncover the unsettling secrets hidden beneath the cheerful surface of The Boroughs. Though our heroes are a bit older than the characters in Stranger Things, they’re just as endearing and quirky, and we know you’ll love joining them on a journey that’s both frightening, hilarious, and heartwarming.
Netflix will release all episodes of The Boroughs on May 21st. The series is produced by Upside Down Pictures, with Ben Taylor (known for Sex Education) as an executive producer. Following the success of Stranger Things, the creators, the Duffer brothers, are now helping to develop new series for the platform, bringing the same creative energy that made their original show so popular.
