Netflix is now home to another exciting action series. Following the popularity of The Night Agent, they’ve released a new show that’s already gaining attention.
Like the popular series Reacher, the new Netflix show Man on Fire is based on a well-known book that’s been adapted for the screen before. The original Man on Fire story, featuring the character Creasy, was first published in 1980 and previously made into films in 1987 and 2004. According to FlixPatrol, the Netflix series quickly became a hit, reaching top status just one day after its April 30th release.
The series Man on Fire is now the most popular show on Netflix. It reached the No. 1 spot in 22 countries and quickly became a top hit in many others, including the U.S., where it’s currently second only to the documentary Should I Marry A Murderer?.
What Happens in Man on Fire?
The strong performance of ‘Man on Fire’ is especially encouraging given the lengthy development process. Netflix greenlit the series in March 2023, but it wasn’t until later that production truly began. The lead actor joined the project in June 2024, and filming started shortly after. There was a short delay in production when the actor unfortunately suffered an injury on set.
Even though filming happened in late 2024 and early 2025, .
The new seven-episode TV series, Man on Fire, draws inspiration from both A.J. Quinnell’s original 1980 novel and its 1992 sequel, The Perfect Kill. The show centers on John Creasy, a former Special Forces mercenary with a reputation for resilience. Now struggling with severe PTSD and inner turmoil, John seeks a new beginning, but quickly finds himself thrust back into dangerous and challenging circumstances, forcing him to fight for survival like never before.
Beyond Denzel Washington, Man on Fire has a really strong supporting cast. Billie Boullet, who I loved in World-Breaker, plays Poe Rayburn, and Alice Braga, fantastic in City of God, is Valeria Melo. You’ll also recognize Scoot McNairy – I remember him from True Detective – as Henry Tappen, and Bobby Cannavale, who’s great in pretty much everything but I recently saw him in The Watcher and Scarpetta, as Paul Rayburn.
Man on Fire Had a Solid Debut
It’s rare for a widely known title to consistently impress both critics and viewers, but Man on Fire seems to be one of those exceptions. While reviews were initially mixed, they’re still generally positive. Currently, it holds a 60% rating on review aggregators, which still qualifies as “fresh,” and actually surpasses the 39% “rotten” score of Denzel Washington’s 2004 movie. Audience approval is also strong, with a 67% rating.
Man on Fire is streaming on Netflix.
