The first episode of the Netflix series Dark introduced a major surprise. Over three seasons (2017-2020), the show followed four families in the small German town of Winden as they investigated the disappearance of young Mikkel Nielsen. They soon discovered a time travel conspiracy stretching back a hundred years, and realized they were all connected in unexpected ways, with the core mystery established right from the beginning.
The series Dark centers around a conflict that plays out across different time periods. The story begins with the mysterious disappearances of people in the town of Winden, including Erik Obendorf and Mads Nielsen in 1986, and Mikkel Nielsen in the very first episode, titled “Secrets.” But Mikkel’s disappearance wasn’t truly the end of his story.
Mikkel Teases His Own Disappearance in Dark’s Premiere Episode
Four months before people started vanishing in November 2019, Jonas witnessed his father, Michael Kahnwald (played by Sebastian Rudolph), take his own life in his workshop. When people begin to disappear in Obendorf, detectives Charlotte Doppler (Karoline Eichhorn) and Ulrich Nielsen (Oliver Masucci), the father of Martha, Mikkel, and Magnus (Moritz Jahn), start investigating.
The mystery deepens when Ulrich’s youngest child, Mikkel, also vanishes. He goes missing after venturing into the woods with Jonas, Magnus, Franziska Doppler, Martha, and Martha’s boyfriend, Bartosz Tiedemann, and disappears inside Winden’s caves.
A young boy unexpectedly travels back in time to 1986 and is taken in by Ines Kahnwald. The show soon reveals a stunning twist: this boy is actually Jonas’s future father, Michael Kahnwald. This early revelation in Dark was a huge surprise, and it foreshadowed the many complex twists and turns to come.
Mikkel hinted at this discovery earlier, while playfully performing magic for his father the morning he went missing. After Mikkel made a ball vanish, Ulrich asked how he did it, and Mikkel mysteriously replied, “It’s not about how it happened, but when.”
At the time, Mikkel didn’t realize how accurate his words would be. When he asked “the question is when,” he was unknowingly hinting at his own future time travel. His father’s search for answers would eventually reveal the meaning of that question, but with devastating consequences, as Ulrich would become trapped in the past – the 1950s.
You know, rewatching the first episode of Dark, I realized Mikkel actually hinted at what was going to happen to him! It’s amazing how easily we all missed it the first time around. It really speaks to how masterfully the show set up its central mystery, drawing us in without us even realizing how deeply it was going to pull us in.
How Dark’s Time Travel Developed Over the Series’ Duration
Mikkel Nielsen’s journey into the caves and subsequent arrival in 1986 was just the beginning of the time travel mysteries in Dark. Following his disappearance, Jonas learned about the nature of time travel and discovered the truth about his family.
This discovery allowed many people in Winden to understand how their town was linked to both the past and the future. Jonas found out that his older self, known as Adam, led a secretive group called Sic Mundus. This group worked to make sure events happened as planned, completing a repeating cycle of time.
He discovers Winden is facing an unusual and devastating future. Simultaneously, people from different eras – the 1880s, 1920s, 1950s, and 1980s – become caught up in the same puzzling events. The ability to travel through time lets families like the Kahnwalds, Nielsens, Dopplers, and Tiedemanns uncover how they’re all connected.
Hannah Kahnwald travels back in time to the 1950s and has a daughter, Silja, with Egon Tiedemann, who is Bartosz’s grandfather. Years later, Silja and Bartosz marry and have two children, Hanno and Agnes. Agnes eventually has a son named Tronte with the child of Jonas and Martha. Tronte then becomes the father of Ulrich and Mads, making him the grandfather of Martha, Mikkel, and Magnus. This complex family history creates a time-bending connection between generations.
The show delved deeper into its central mystery, using different possible timelines instead of straightforward time travel. The puzzle remained unsolved until the very end, maintaining suspense throughout the entire series.
While many shows attempt intricate plots, Dark excelled by focusing on its characters and their personal stories, which contributed to its success and made it one of Netflix’s most compelling and mysterious series.
By centering the story around the people of the small town of Winden and beginning with a seemingly simple disappearance, Dark grounded its complex time travel elements in a relatable reality. While the show cleverly holds onto its biggest secrets until the very end, the first episode subtly hinted at what happened to Mikkel – and how he would eventually become Michael – even before the full transformation was revealed.
