After a controversial season 5 finale that took over a decade to arrive, Stranger Things is continuing the story with a brand-new adventure. Though fans waited a long time for the main series to conclude, we’re already getting a return to The Upside Down thanks to the trailer for the animated prequel.
The new animated series, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, will feature the same characters – like Eleven, Mike, and Hopper – but with different voice actors. Brooklyn Davey Norstedt will voice Eleven, with Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max, Luca Diaz as Mike, Elisha “EJ” Williams as Lucas, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Benjamin Plessala as Will, and Brett Gipson as Hopper. Joining them will be Odessa A’zion, Janeane Garofalo, and Lou Diamond Phillips.
The animated series Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 will premiere on Netflix on April 23, 2026. Eric Robles, known for Fanboy & Chum Chum, is the showrunner, and Flying Bark Productions (the studio behind What If…? and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) is handling the animation. You can find the new trailer and a description of the series below.
It’s the winter of 1985 in Hawkins, and the characters you know are facing a brand new challenge. In Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, they’ll battle terrifying monsters and try to solve a strange mystery that’s gripping their town.
What Does the Future Hold for ‘Stranger Things: Tales from ’85’?
So, what about the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers? Did they leave the show after the controversial ending and head to their new deal with Paramount? Actually, no – Matt and Ross Duffer will still be involved as executive producers. They’re already planning several spin-offs, starting with Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, which aims to recapture the 80s vibe fans love.
One of the first things we discussed when thinking about future possibilities for ‘Stranger Things’ was creating something that felt like an ’80s cartoon,” explained Ross Duffer. His brother, Matt Duffer, added that this was the core idea behind the project.

Although it hasn’t been officially announced, many fans believe Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 will have multiple seasons. A recent leak, confirmed by a behind-the-scenes documentary about Stranger Things 5, suggests the animated prequel is renewed for two seasons, expected in 2026. While this isn’t the continuation of the main story some were hoping for, it does mean Eleven, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Will, and Max will have more adventures in the Stranger Things universe.
