Netflix renews Supacell sci-fi series for season 2
As a passionate viewer who’s been on a rollercoaster of emotions since the debut of diverse and groundbreaking series like “Supacell,” I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement with the news that it’s coming back for Season 2! Growing up, I yearned to see stories and characters that resonated with my experiences and background. With its captivating plot, relatable characters, and unapologetic representation, “Supacell” has filled that void beautifully.
According to Variety, it’s officially confirmed that the British sci-fi series “Supacell” will return for a second season on Netflix. The happy news was quickly shared by one of the actors following Netflix’s announcement, which they made through their social media platforms on Tuesday, August 13th.
As a fan, I’d put it this way: “Supacell” follows the journey of five everyday individuals – myself included, as I hail from South London – who unexpectedly develop extraordinary powers. What binds us together is not friendship or shared history, but our common origin and the color of our skin. Our lives are turned upside down by Michael Lasaki, a delivery driver with a unique ability to teleport, who brings us together.”
Written by Rapman, the science fiction show maintained its top position on Netflix for six weeks straight after premiering on June 27. As I write this piece, the series continues to be highly rated on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting a perfect score of 100% and an audience score of 73%. Critics from Metacritic and Variety, among others, have generally given it positive reviews.
This is great news for those who became fans of the series and the industry across the pond, which provides a new perspective for storytelling in this medium from communities in the global majority, particularly Black ethnicities outside of the U.S. and Canada. Look out for our very own review from our write for Bam!Smack!Pow! which will be a series overall review of Supacell Season 1.

Aramide Tinubu from Variety expressed her thoughts about the first season in her review, stating that “Supacell explores how individualism has led to divisions within Western societies, particularly within Black communities that were once united through collectivity.” This underscores the significance of challenging the norm and pushing past established barriers for stories predominantly centered on Black experiences or Pan-African perspectives. Moreover, it emphasizes a need for less stereotypical portrayals often associated with non-POCs/Caucasians in narratives.
Over the past month since the series premiered on the Big Red-N, I, a dedicated TV viewer and writer, have been eagerly waiting for updates. The series “Supacell” garnered an impressive 11.8 million views in its first week alone, and as of July 29th, it had accumulated another 1.4 million views.
The main cast of Supacell consists of Tosin Cole, Adelayo Adedayo, Calvin Demba, Josh Tedeku, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi Abrefa, Eddie Marsen, Kyomani Carty, Rayxia Ojo, Ghetts, Digga D, and Giacomo Mancini.
The creative team at New Wave Productions is responsible for crafting the series that’s streaming on Netflix right now. If you’re interested, season 1 of “Supacell” is currently available for viewing!
