Near-perfect BBC crime drama branded “exceptional” gets exciting new-season update

Filming for season 3 of Sherwood is finished, and a new family will be the focus of the story. Creator James Graham says the characters will face intense challenges in the next season.

The popular crime drama, based on actual murders that happened in Nottinghamshire, is coming back for a third season with returning stars Lesley Manville and David Morrissey.

Graham recently told Radio Times that filming for season 3 is finished, bringing the show closer to its release on BBC One.

“Finished filming series 3, that’s in the edit,” Graham said.

It’s been wonderful having the original cast members return – actors like Lesley Manville, David Morrissey, and Lorraine Ashbourne, as well as bringing back Claire Rushbrook and Robert Glenister. Just saying their names, I’m amazed they agreed to work with me – I feel incredibly fortunate.

Graham branded these stars “proper national treasures”.

What’s really special about the cast of Sherwood is that they seem to come from a background where they’re deeply committed to making TV dramas that explore social and political issues.

Graham shared that season 3 will introduce a new family, played by actors Rosalie Craig and Joe Dempsie.

Like all our shows, this series features a new family facing a difficult challenge. We really push them to their limits, and it’s incredibly compelling to watch. The cast is led by Rosalie Craig, recently seen in Riot Women, and Joe Dempsie, known from Skins. It’s fantastic to have such talented Nottingham actors bringing a story set in Nottinghamshire to life.

The TV show Sherwood has been incredibly well-received, earning a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes after two seasons. The first season even achieved a perfect score.

The second showing received high praise from critics. The Times called it “exceptional,” and the BBC noted the excellent acting, realistic conversations, and unpredictable plot, encouraging viewers to continue watching.

Season 3 of Sherwood will be coming to BBC One and BBC iPlayer soon. You can currently watch seasons 1 and 2 on BBC iPlayer.
