NCIS: Origins changes the established story of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his original team, now showing that women played a key role in its creation. The new series revisits important moments from Gibbs’ past, reimagining events from the original show and featuring Austin Stowell as a young Gibbs.
Premiering in 2024, NCIS: Origins offers a deeper look into the world of law enforcement than previous installments, focusing on the beginning of Gibbs’ career with NIS in the 1990s. As the first NCIS series set in the past, NCIS: Origins is able to build upon what we know of Gibbs’ backstory, highlighting that his successes were the result of teamwork.
NCIS: Origins Revives A 12-Year-Old Mark Harmon Story From NCIS Season 11
As a big NCIS fan, I’ve been really enjoying NCIS: Origins Season 2. It’s fascinating to see them explore how Gibbs’ legendary team – the Fed Five – really came together. It all started way back in Season 11 of the original NCIS, specifically Episodes 18 and 19, which actually served as a kind of ‘test run’ for what would become the NCIS: New Orleans spinoff. That show, starring Scott Bakula as the awesome Dwayne Pride – everyone called him ‘King’ – sadly didn’t last, but it’s cool to see its origins being revisited.
This new series tells the story of how the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s New Orleans field office first came together. It also brings back fan-favorite character Dwayne Pride, played by Shea Buckner as a younger man. The show reveals that Pride and Gibbs had a tense history, starting in 1981 New Orleans when Pride physically confronted Gibbs’ father, Jackson (Robert Taylor), at a jazz club.
Dwayne Pride and Dan McLane (Mark Deklin) assist the agents at Camp Pendleton with the investigation, as it may be linked to cases being handled by the Panama office. Diany Rodriguez leads a joint task force, bringing the two offices together to collaborate. Even though they have a history of conflict, Gibbs and Pride team up and go undercover in the episode “Feelin’ Alright?”
The recent introduction of Pride in the series cleverly connects back to an earlier case involving the Fed Five, specifically their investigation of the “Privileged Killer.” Then, NCIS: Origins goes even further back in time, showing how the task force first came together and revealing that Pride nearly saved Gibbs’ life. The show also updates the history of the NCIS franchise to include more prominent roles for women.
How NCIS: Origins Rewrites Gibbs’ & Pride’s Fed Five Legacy
The series NCIS: Origins reveals how important team members were left out of the original ‘Fed Five’ group in the 1990s. The show highlights how gender bias influenced who got credit for the team’s accomplishments. Because of prejudice from McLane and NIS Director Barrett (Toby Huss), certain individuals were ignored when the story of the joint task force was first told, and the prequel is now changing that narrative.
The trouble with gender bias at the NIS office starts when Gibbs and Pride go undercover. McLane won’t let Lala join them in the van, believing she’d be a distraction. As a result, Lala has to stay behind at NIS, and Bernard “Randy” Randolf steps in to handle her usual duties.
But Vera faces even more unfair treatment from NIS. Even though she led the internal task force, she’s left out when the “Fed Five” receive recognition. The final scene shows Strickland deliberately excluded from a group photo – Director Barrett wants a picture without any women to create a more appealing image, effectively ignoring the fact that Strickland founded the group.
Vera and Lala are crucial to solving the case, and their joint interrogation of a key witness reveals Captain Ellis (Brent Harvey) is the source of illegal weapons. However, when the show discusses the ‘Fed Five,’ it overlooks the contributions of women. NCIS: Origins aims to correct this, offering a more inclusive version of the story and acknowledging previously untold truths.
