NASCAR: 2 possible sources for a third RFK Racing charter

NASCAR: 2 possible sources for a third RFK Racing charter

As a seasoned NASCAR enthusiast who’s been following this sport for over three decades, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation as we approach the 2025 season. The announcements by Trackhouse Racing Team and Front Row Motorsports about their expansion to three cars each are certainly noteworthy developments.

For the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, both Trackhouse Racing Team and Front Row Motorsports will be increasing their car count from two to three. Although Front Row Motorsports has yet to sign the new NASCAR charter agreement, this expansion is expected due to their acquisition of charters previously held by Stewart-Haas Racing.

Earlier in the 2024 racing season, it was announced that Stewart-Haas Racing would be winding down its operations once the season ends. Co-owner Gene Haas intends to keep one of the team’s four licenses and establish a single-car team known as the Haas Factory Team. Cole Custer, who currently races for Stewart-Haas in the Xfinity Series, has been selected to drive the No. 41 Ford for this new team.

For the 2025 racing season, it remains possible for one more Stewart-Haas Racing charter to be claimed, as there are several teams reportedly considering growth and expansion.

23XI Racing is currently considered a strong contender for acquiring this charter, but they haven’t signed the charter agreement as of now, which means that expanding from two to three cars isn’t a certainty.

It has been reported that RFK Racing is considering growth for the 2025 season, and adding Kroger, a longtime sponsor of JTG Daugherty Racing, could help make this expansion possible. Ryan Preece, who currently drives the No. 41 Ford for Stewart-Haas Racing, has been rumored to join the team as their third driver.

Where will RFK Racing get a charter?

However, it’s worth noting that RFK Racing might refrain from increasing their team size to three cars unless they acquire a third charter. This is due to the substantial financial penalty associated with operating a full-time non-chartered entry.

In simple terms, RFK Racing might find a third charter from Stewart-Haas Racing in 2025 as a likely possibility, but it’s too soon to rule out 23XI Racing. Additionally, Rick Ware Racing could also emerge as a potential supplier.

It’s uncertain if RFK Racing is considering buying a charter or having one rented to them. They have a technological partnership with Rick Ware Racing, but as of now, there are no announcements regarding Rick Ware’s team’s plans for the 2025 season.

In a mid-season change, Justin Haley has shifted to Spire Motorsports, with Corey LaJoie stepping into Haley’s previous role. However, while Spire Motorsports officially announced Haley as part of their team for the upcoming season, Rick Ware Racing hasn’t yet confirmed LaJoie as a member of their lineup.

Rick Ware Racing has found themselves frequently near the base of the team rankings, and as more formidable teams expand and less competitive ones like Live Fast Motorsports let go of their charters lately, the steepness of the climb for them only gets steeper.

In 2024, Haley’s outstanding performance, surpassing all previous records within the team, suggests that Rick Ware Racing still has potential and might benefit from a reduction to a single vehicle. Maintaining their partnership with an ever-growing RFK Racing could be mutually advantageous.
